"Stop Asking Your Friends What to Text Her"

Your buddy Dave has been single for three years and thinks "hey u up" is a valid strategy. Your other buddy Mike just got dumped and told you to "just be yourself."

You showed them her text. You asked them to decode the emoji. You drafted four responses and sent the screenshot to the group chat for a vote.

She's been waiting forty minutes.

Put the phone down. Stop crowdsourcing your love life. Type something that sounds like you. Hit send. Then go do literally anything else with your evening.

' A place where he is no longer a boy but not yet a man; where he trips over beer cans in the morning on his way out the door, and asks for the woman he wakes up with to jot down her e-mail rather than her phone number to save him the embarrassment of having to ask her name.'

'Incidentally, dating younger girls draws a curiously bitter response from single women my own age. I remind them that there is nice symmetry in this: every schoolboy remembers the moment at 15 when all the best-looking girls in his year decided they didn’t fancy their spotty-faced contemporaries and began dating the sixth-former with a Vauxhall Astra. It’s not revenge, exactly, but they started it.'

"I just moved here from Florida."

That sentence contains at least five follow-up questions she WANTS you to ask. Where in Florida? What brought you here? How long have you been in the area? What do you miss? How does it compare to here?

She handed them to you on a silver platter. And you said, "Oh cool. I come here every week. I love this band. Ummm... pretty crowded tonight."

She smiled politely. Nodded. And never texted you back.

I was that guy for years. Talking too much. Listening too little. Panicking about my next sentence while she was literally feeding me the answers.

Then I found 22 rules that fixed the whole thing. Rule number one: shut up and listen. She'll tell you exactly what to say.

Great article. Read the comments at the end---notice how all the "shamers" are either a) married men, or b) single women? This is nothing more than a socially-reinforced automated response which attempts to shame single men and justify the lot of the unhappily married and the expired women. People do this all the time; and it only intensifies as you get older.

G'dayee MintX,
I suppose it is only natural that young people have values that are theoretical rather than practical, they have not experienced,at this stage of their lives that fact so often contradicts theory, never is this so evident as in our social conditioning to relationship outcomes.....When you are starting out in life, the challenges inherent in running a home both financially and practically speaking as well as trying to establish a career are best shared....group living can have many advantages and is a viable alternative to conventional shacking up with a floozy.......My advice if this life style appeals, think of buying a place with a discrete personal living area,as a retreat for yourself and then rent out rooms....always choose malleable individuals who you can dispense with if problems emerge, without the fear of them turning nasty.....never set up a Harem.....best to chose same sex socially attractive people a little younger than yourself then as well as helping establish your own financial independence, there will be a constant flow of friends providing options in the future....serial monogamy is the way to go,each relationship progresses through various stages, and there comes a time when you have to move on....In this Man,certainly not everyone, familiarity breeds contempt and protracted contact with friends and lovers after a while becomes tedious, being able to enjoy your own space refreshes you and makes company more vibrant, attractive when you need it again....As I have stated before,I agree with Stephen Hawkings that we really are just repositories for our genes,I think I share with most people a recognition that at some stage there comes a deep seated need to pass on some tangible memory of your existence in your genes....But please recognise that by doing so you are placing your neck in a silken noose,in this Country there is no real way of protecting your assetts, being chained to a wealthy woman, and having a well written Pre Nuptial will help, but that is only material things,Children are another Issue and here you really are in a no win situation. If you don't have my hang Ups then why would you ever bother putting golden hancuffs on,and giving your key to the State ?....If you have the courage of your convictions, earn your own money and have no life threatening illness pending then why buy a book when you may join a Library?rest assured the Lonely Old Man Syndrome is just like the boogy man under the Bed,the dating game just get better and better as you get Older......I find the Use by date of live in relationships about half that of a visiting Comfort Lady....at the end, sure as Spring is inevitably followed by Winter, you will be Blue, but then this sorrow will be overtaken by a new more wonderful obsession introducing you to new interests, expanding and invigorating your philosophy....and so the Roundabout will keep turning, just new variations on old themes....

As if I NEEDED permission to continue with my soulless, hedonistic, single existence.
