I tend to be a reserved person, and I’ve noticed that many times when I approach somebody (not necessarily picking up women) I don’t smile as much as I should. When you have a serious expression on your face people tend to stay away. It tells the world you don’t want to be bothered right now. Some people may even interpret it as arrogance. We all know what an important non-verbal cue smiling is when dealing with other people. In fact it’s vital for any type of social success.

However, if you’re shy, nervous, or simply having a stressful, busy day, it may be difficult to crack a smile.

Of course, you could always fake it. I’ve tried this with varying degrees of success. It’s better than nothing, but there is no substitute for the real thing.

So how do you crack a genuine smile when you really aren’t feeling all that cheerful? Simple: think of something hilarious when you make your approach. I’ve tried this technique several times over the last few months. I always use it when I’m busy and stressed out over midterms or finals, and yes, it works. Today, while dealing with a cute receptionist at my university, a Dave Chappelle joke came to mind, and I couldn’t help but grin when I walked up to her desk. Flirting immediately ensued. Had I not smiled, the dynamic of our exchange would have been completely different.

There you have it. One disclaimer: Obviously you don’t want to be laughing like a hysterical psychopath. That would just be creepy. Just think of something funny enough to lift your mood and lighten things up a bit.

Tell her a little about yourself, but not too much. Maintain some mystery. Give her something to think about and wonder about when she's at home.

Is arrogance unattractive? Why do so many women fancy Simon Cowell?

Because he's on TV and has a British accent.

Arrogance isn't always bad. There are exceptions to everything. It's all how you pull it off. Being slightly ****y is better than full-on arrogance, IMHO.

True.

It goes much deeper than that. His approval is notoriously hard to win and women love a challenge. Make them earn a smile.

I have noticed that if I think of something funny and laugh or smile to myself that if a woman happens to look my way she will usually smile back. You can usually see a little spark in their eyes.

Come to think of it, realize that we really smile with our eyes, not so much with our mouths. You can always tell a fake smile by looking at the eyes. When smiling at a woman, be conscious of the state of your eyes.

BS.
Why smile if you don't want to?
I smile naturally, when I am with someone I like and don't when I don't feel like.
Nothing worse than a plastic smile.

It's often counterproductive and misleading to compare somebody who is on TV to the rest of us who deal with situations in the real world.

Yes, women love a challenge, but I think it needs to be made clear to everybody here that smiling is not a form of supplication. It shows you have confidence and a good attitude. It is not something that must be "earned." Smiling and being a challenge are certainly not mutually exclusive.

Because sometimes you do things you don't want to do to improve your life.
If you're in a cheerful mood 24 hours a day, more power to you. You don't need this tip. Being happy is something all of us on this site are striving for. It's the ideal. But if you haven't reached that point in your life yet, this tip can help.

To see professional smilers in action, watch television. TV show hosts (usually of fluffy entertainment shows with bubbly hosts) almost always smile while they talk. And as soon as they stop talking, the smile reasserts itself in full bloom. I was amazed when I noticed this: it is relentless. No wonder millions of people get zombified by TV every night.

Another thing I noticed was head movements. TV hosts always move their heads when they talk. This is basic public speaking technique, but you can see it in action at any time by watching the news or virtually any hosted programme.

I've practiced smile-talking when meeting female shop assistants. You instantly see they relax and become more attentive (leaning forward, smiling in return, etc.) when I try this. Obviously it's handy for cold approaching women in all situations. I basically lift the corners of my mouth up as I talk, and smile while she speaks. And I mean not smiling like a clown standing on her front lawn at midnight, but a nice casual relaxed smile. Raised eye brows and general high energy levels are good too, as always.

=) Happy :) sarging. :D :) :D

I had a good smile during my childhood, but my orthodontist removed it (pulled teeth and caved in my mouth). Even when I'm smiling, people say "smile".
