Question about Whey and Creatine

I've read in several places that when you mix up your creatine you should drink it right away (or within the first hour or so). This is because the creatine will turn into creatinine if you let it sit too long and creatinine is useless to the body.

Is this also true with whey powder or other meal replacement drinks?

I usually mix up my whey in the morning and take it to work in a thermos. I drink half of it a couple hours later and then the other half at the end of the day.

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about this.

You should spoon the creatine powder directly into your mouth and then wash it down with a whey protein + high-glycemic carb shake. I recommend a shake consisting of whey protein, maltodextrin, dextrose. Do not mix the creatine with water or any other liquid because it will break down into creatinine. Make sure the creatine powder you are using is pure creatine monohydrate. Look for creatine products that sport the "creapure" logo. I recommend Optimum Nutrition's Creatine Monohydrate powder.

It will breakdown if you put it in water for a long time. Mixing it with different liquids, however, doesn't matter. If a little bit of citric acid hurts creatine THAT much it wouldn't survive sitting in the stomach.

I don't have any sources off hand, but there was publication about it. That is why knowledgable people do not use the creatine syrum, because over the course of time it breaks down. It's not alot, but when it is shelved for a while it not only make a difference but you want to get the most out of your money :p

Other liquids don't matter. Mix it with what you want to; as long as it doesn't sit for while, you will get the most out of it.

the fact that water breaks down creatine, and that liquids containing citric acid break down creatine faster is pretty common knowledge.

mixing it in water and drinking it down wont make a big difference. i just plop it on my tongue and take it down w/ water because its quicker, but not really superior.

You are off your rocker extreme, mixing creating with water is perfectly fine.
That is incorrect. Creatine becomes unstable rapidly when mixed with solution. Read the link I posted.

Now putting that sh1t in your mouth is not only dangerous but stupid.
Why is that? It doesn't say anywhere in those links you posted that is the case. On the other hand, the link I posted backs up all of my claims, so I don't see the point you were trying to make.

Yes, it becomes unstable, but it doesn't matter that much. If you are aiming for the fast absorbtion, why not get esther creatine anyways? There is no reason to get this anal about Mono, when it doesn't make a huge ass difference.

Rapidly? If you mean a few hours, yeah. Citric acid is not that damaging. The pH in your stomach is far lower.

The ignorance on this board is astounding.


Don't mix creatine with citrus juice. Orange, grapefruit, cranberry, in fact, most fruit juices have been most recently found to neutralize the activity of creatine monohydrate. The reason is the waste product creatinine develops. A lot of you put creatine on your tongue and drink it down with grapefruit juice. If you have taken creatine this way in the past, stop it now! You are not getting creatine, you're getting waste product.

yeah, i know that it breaks down, but not that it breaks down at the rate he gave the impression of. you can mix it with liquid and chug it down, it's not like it takes 2seconds and then *poof* turns into creatintine.

I'm on the skinnyguy diet and i take phosphagen HP. It recommends to mix it with about 300ml of water in a shaker, then drink it. Are you saying that this is wrong, and i should just put a scoop in my mouth, and then wash that down with water?

That's what I'm saying. Scoop it into your mouth and then wash it down with water. Also, Phosphagen HP is crap because it contains sugars, carbs, and other stuff that you don't need. Switch over to a brand that is pure creatine monohydrate. That means the only thing it contains is creatine monohydrate. Look for brands that have the "creapure" logo on them.

The sugars are there to spike your insulin and increase creatine absorbtion. It's the same reason people take post workout dextrose.
