Quarter life crisis....New Career!......Suggestions

So I'm gonna move in a new direction. 25 years old......Econ major......used to work for JPM and other crappy corporate gigs. Been trading the market on my own for a while. Thinking about changing careers, but still want to trade.

Thinking about

1) Border Patrol......this would be awesome, you get to play hide and seek as an adult. , ride ATV's......

Downside: sh#tty retirement package. Put 20 years in, and you might only be making $20k per year retirement b/c of their ridiculous annuity. And I might get stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Upside: Laying the law down on our dirty neighbor ! $70k after 3 years.


2) Corrections......guard bad guys. Awesome retirement package. CT corrections gives u a pension of 50% of pay after 20 years, 2% more per year thereafter. Therefore, retire w/ 30 years, get 70% of pay. Start at $38k, 36 hrs per week, 5 days on 3 days off. Father worked there. Some guys pulling in 70-100k w/ overtime.

Downsides: It could get boring.
upsides: Its an easy way to get into State Po-po

3) Police...........i dont think i have any chance right now, b/c I dont think i'd pass the polygraph.

You're gonna need to kill a bunch of brain cells first. Those jobs will all bore you senseless.

Maybe you should think about why "shooting Mexicans" seems like so much fun, and you are so attracted to wielding authority. Illegal immigrants pay a lot more in taxes than they take back in social services, plus they do the jobs that no one else will do, like work in slaughterhouses. And prisoners are, for the most part, not even that bad of guys. 90% of the people in jail are there just for being fvckups and are not really a danger to anyone.

If you were not that bright, these things would not occur to you, and these jobs would be a good idea. I know a lot of prison guards; the smart ones are miserable. I think you are too intelligent to be happy at any of the jobs you suggest.

Father worked in Corrections for 30 years. Yes, many are fvck ups, but saying most are harmless is underestimating slightly.

I have worked the corporate gig, i have done the financial analysis garbage, sucking up to my boss, yada yada. I hated it. I didn't want to be a cog in a wheel. So I became a professional trader. Sacrificed a lot. LOVE what I do. Currently being mentored by a trader thats 28 yrs old and is worth $50 million through trading alone. UNFORTUNALELY, my road to success will take a lot longer than I thought.

I 100% regret never joining the military. My personality is more suited for law enforcement. My father has warned me there are MANY unintelligent idiots in the DOC. Many have gotten there b/c the state is being forced to fill 'quotas' and he said a lot of the guys I might not like. But I feel as though if I never give this a chance, I will always regret it.


In terms of the border patrol, if the US wants me to enforce our border (OBama specifically called for 6k more agents by end of '08) I will do it. You really think illegals should be taking work from us at a time where most can't get work themselves ? Also, most of what I would be doing is preventing human smuggling and preventing the smuggling of drugs. Drug smuggling......you want your children exposed to more drugs ? I dont. It is not a boring job in the slightest. In fact, you see more "action" than police

Yes, Mexicans might be repressed, but in the grand scheme of things, Humanity still has a LONG way to go, if we are to evolve into a more civilized race. Not letting Mexicans into the country is really not a big deal.

Take a Meyer-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) test. This will give you good info on what you are suited for personality-wise. If you regret not joining the military it's not too late at 25. And you can find a lot of interesting jobs once in the door. Why not go for something like CIA/FBI counter-terrorism? That lets you play cops and robbers on a grand scale but with a lot more hardware, technology, and IQ involved.

I worked the corporate jobs too, after graduating in economics and a management degree. HATED them for the same reason you say (especially that everybody sucks up to their boss, blah blah). Couldn't stand the culture.

Quit work to trade (huge sacrifice, many called me a bum, a dreamer). Felt the same, that I was in a quarter life crisis. Joining the Australian equivelent of the CIA was something on my mind. It was going to be a private eye job. Ended up joining the best prop firm in the Asian region which is located in Australia.

I reckon departed's comment may be of use. I can see what Bible is saying, though you may see action, it won't exactly be mentally stimulating.

yah, i've taken that test. Took it like 4 or 5 times in the span of a few years, always came out an ESTJ.

FBI is a no go just yet. Maybe after I gain other law enforcement experience.

Truthfully, corrections seems where I'm leaning b/c I can stay in Connecticut w/ my friends and family, kick a$$, and trade futures still during days off, and maybe during day if i'm given a non-day shift position.

Oh, and I want to buy a house, but no bank will give me a mortgage on self-employed income......lol

Also, its hard for me to trade, pyschologically, w/o another dependable income source. And i dont mean a crappy $10 / hr job. I need to pull in $40,000 or so, so that losses won't affect me emotionally.

The Border Patrol background is harder to pass than most police backgrounds and the academy is very demanding plus you have to learn Spanish. It's not really about shooting illegal aliens.There's a lot of politics maybe even more than at a corporation. Most corporate political BS is thanks to government political BS. It's so PC it's more like illegal alien drug dealers are allowed to shoot at the border patrol and they can't shoot back. Ever heard about those two mexican-american US Border Patrol Agents being sent to federal prison for shooting and wounding an illegal alien drug smuggler? I'm exaggerating a little, but the Border Patrol treats the illegals better than most local PD's and Federal law enforcement treat US citizens.

Having said that I would apply if you want to go in law enforcement. Also I think their (Border Patrol) retirement benefits are a lot better than you are saying. And a lot of people once they get in the Border Patrol later move on to other Federal law enforcement careers.

Yes, I know about the gov't political bs. But, like some police officers, many BPA's have never had to fire their weapon before. So its not as common to go shoot illegal mexicans, even though I said that originally in my post, OBVIOUSLY i was exaggerating.


In terms of retirment, I will have to recheck. I know there's a thrift savings plan which works similar to a 401k. But the annuity is pretty crappy, compared to what many state's offer.

Well, if that is indeed correct, i won't even bother applying for BPA. While I've never committed any crimes or done any drugs besides experimental use a few times, they can definitely figure out some ways to DQ me, as I am not perfect. I've done my fair share of stupid sh#t.

SO if you are right, and they do a full BI, worse than PD, then I won't even bother applying.
