not all women like to be picked up in bars. theres a stigman involved in that and this stigma screams SLUT, now, more then ever.
pick up women in the daylight at a grocery store or on the street. youre going to have a leg up over a "night game" guys cause it takes some more balls to approach chicks during the day.
most girls are actually pretty sweet. the "get lost creep" line you see in media is only true if you really come on as a creep.
see, women fantasy about being picked up in the day. movies have programmed them to enjoy the day pick up.

Book stores and coffee shops are the only places I actually see cute (usually not hot) girls alone for more than a few minutes. They post up with a laptop or book and coffee. And unlike, say, the college library, it usually isn't SERIOUS studying where they don't want to be bothered with conversation.
Everybody always mentions grocery stores for good reason. There is definitely a plethora of topics to talk about at a grocery store. The jokes write themselves, make sure you drop one or two about melons, bananas, or buns. Hot chicks seem to like Whole Foods.
Concerts. I don't know how it is for EDM or Dubstep or whatever the kids are listening to these days but at indie rock or jamband shows you can get a friendly female clientel. Most of whom you have at least one thing in common with if you like that kind of music. Not the hottest girls but usually the most open.
Gym. I don't go to "the gym" but I know guys who meet girls there.

In addition to what's been mentioned, Panera Bread and places like it, that place is a hotbed of leg in my area, charity events. Women you meet doing charity type things tend to be higher quality IME. Pick a fun charity you enjoy that is not too physically taxing so that it attracts women too.

Once I hooked up with my tax lady from HR Block. She was a fvcking animal in the sack too. Looking at all those numbers all day must bring out some major sexual aggression. She said "she is into all fetishes that ever existed. There is not a single fetish she doesn't participate in". In reality sometimes you meet women where you least expect. Always be in gaming mode, but put your mind on other things you are doing and sometimes one can land right in your lap in the very most inspecting places and times.

Hell, I met a lot of 'em in the subway and once, I got approached at school by a HOT looking woman when I was reading a manga of all things!!!

The guys are right, it can happen anywhere. Just do your thing, and when the opportunity comes, turn on the gaming switch instantly. The key being you have to go do things. H&R Block...damn.
Here are some places I've picked up girls & got into bed easily (also married one I met by one of these ways).
Wandering around the mall. Smile, look into her eyes. If she smiles then stares back, you've got her, if not, next. I haven't done it for years, but there is a particular mall where I used to play a game: I have four hours to meet a girl who will have sex with me before the end of the day. Not get her number (way too easy). Not get her to go out (no challenge). But to get her into bed that day. I usually won.
In line at McDonalds (1)
At a food court, look for a girl sitting alone, smile and "May I join you?" (several, including a professional model)
Public transportation: airplanes/airports(4), ferries (1), trains (1)
Pharmacy (she worked in the back counter, beyond where we could talk. I left a note with the guard, please give this to (nametag). It was short "TXT ME ######", about 90 minutes later... "Hi I'm _____") (1)
