People spying on you

My friend told me about these things and its really freaky that just anyone can do this. Is it possible for someone to use a cell phone tracker or any of these technologies on us legally? What if a girl you're in a relationship with or something uses this, is there a way for you to find out?

I know very little about computers, perhaps someone could here could tell us about this stuff? This is serious and it should be illegal.

So, you want a real answer? Very well.

Yes, somebody can spy on you right now. while some of the techniques are plainly illegal or borderline, maybe even creepy, they can totally spy on you and they might not get caught. If you own a relatively new phone, your position can be triangulated using the information from the towers and the feedback from your phone. Your landline can be intercepted using FM bugs and old-fashoned interception machines that work on a physical connection level. Both are pretty easy and there are schematics online. Your MSN conversations can be intercepted too using a simple C++ application as well, using the app as a seamless bridge between user A and user B. Not even the trash from your shredder is safe, as there's an algorithm that takes the images from the shredded pieces and combines them to get the original paper.

Are we in danger? Hell no. Who would go through all that hassle and spend such amount of money on spying on common people? Nobody would earn a penny from doing all of that on you and on top of that, most of these technologies are hard to do and most of them are propiety of private companies with absolutely zero interest on you.

Thanks Nygard. That was interesting about the shredder algorithm, I never heard that but I'm sure it is true.

Does anyone know where to find these cell phone triangulation things? I want to try them on myself, maybe it will help me not have to make one of those annoying "I lost my cell phone I need your number" facebook groups.
