Why "Whatever You Want" Keeps You Single

She says the movie looks dumb; you suddenly agree. She tests you with a little attitude; you apologize for nothing.

You think you're being easy to get along with. She reads something else entirely: a man with no edges. Nothing to hold on to. No friction, no tension, no reason to wonder what he really thinks.

The "22 Rules" taught me to push back — playfully, calmly, without needing her approval. Strange things happened after that.

What's your first impression of this scenario: There's a girl that works at a local store, she's only there on weekends. I'd seen her there a couple weeks ago and , although I felt instant turn-on going on, I still was being the guy I've been for the past ... FAR too long... and I didn't say or do a thing besides pay for whatever I bought silently and leave. I thought about her a few times in between then and this past Sunday, and I even went into the place a couple times checking to see if she was working. (No, I'm not a stalker, just looking) . And so anyway, this past Sunday, I go in there early in the morning, and finally she's there again. What did I do? I choked. Did nothing. In fact I went and got my car washed, and then I RETURNED to the place (with the definite intent of doing something) to buy some damn thing, I don't know, an air freshener for the car or something, and there were alot of other customers around, and so again I choked. I just paid and I left. Terrible! She probably didn't even notice I'd been there twice within like a half-hour or so. Terrible. I had that really weird feeling you get, you know? Heart pounding, adrenaline coursing, feeling a strong desire to act but also feeling paralyzed and choked. Really really nervous.

But this time I decided to do something about it. I wanted to break this self-rejecting self-defeating pattern in my life. I didn't want to go another couple weeks pathetically wondering if this girl's working there or not, or who she is, or whatever, and wondering what would happen if I said hi. So I decided to do something I haven't done in AGES: open her and give it a shot. I had to FORCE myself to act contrary to years of habit. I was tired of being the clammed-up guy and wasting my life away. But here's the thing, here's what I really wanted to get your guys' impression of; what I actually did was I went over to a local florist, and I bought a single pink rose (this past Sunday was the start of "Sweetest Week") . Remembering to deeply breathe, on the verge of panic because I haven't done this in so long, I drove BACK to this place where she works, WITH the rose all wrapped up in its ......rose paper. I parked and, lucky for me, there were no other customers inside at the time. (I am still too shy to do this in front of strangers I think). So I just flat-out stopped her on her way back to her register and I said Hi. I think I laughed and said something dumb like I'm back yet again. But no real opening line or anything. I just said I wanted to take a minute to introduce myself, just like that, and I said, Actually I brought you this (handed her the rose) , as you might or might not know today's the start of Sweetest Week so, this is just a little something I thought would be nice. I told her if she has a sweetest he should be doing stuff like this for her each day this week. She got red and her mouth dropped open ; she looked like she was wondering if she was on candid camera. I said, you're looking at me like I'm crazy. She said , No, this is SO sweet, it's just so unexpected. It's really different. I didn't neg her or anything like that, just a little playful banter, maybe a tad c&f with her. So anyway we chatted for about 15, 20 min's, and she says she's got a bf but it's "very long distance" and not going much of anywhere. She said there are no rings on her fingers and she's free to talk to other people. She asked me what was up with me, if/ why I was single. I assured her that I was. I got the impression she didn't or doesn't fully trust my motives. I may have come off as too "smooth" or something w/the rose, I don't know . She said, Tell me the truth, how many girls are you going to go give those out to today ?? She did tell me I seem like a player-type, after I asked her if that was what she was thinking. (If she only knew; despite whatever I may "look" like, I definitely have NOT been that type!!)

The upshot was I ended up having to give HER my cell # (VERY bad move, I know); a terribly soft close to the whole thing. But I didn't want to walk out with absolutely nothing, blow the whole thing, just because she was just flat-out uncomfortable giving her # out to a male stranger. I can kind of understand that however as I have two younger sisters, and , frankly, if it were them I wouldn't want them to give theirs out to a guy they didn't know who'd just brought them a rose.

So anyway so far she hasn't called ; in general I don't really care. For me the greater victory was breaking the silence, so to speak. I felt 8 feet tall the rest of that day. I felt like I had a million dollars in my bank acct. I felt like a mute who had just found his voice. So, whether this chick calls or not is ultimately not of the utmost importance. I think I've found something more important. That is, some level of self-confidence once again and the ability to actually approach and speak to a stranger of the opposite sex once again. Anyway, advice on what I should have done differently w/the actual encounter itself? ~D

"I just moved here from Florida."

That sentence contains at least five follow-up questions she WANTS you to ask. Where in Florida? What brought you here? How long have you been in the area? What do you miss? How does it compare to here?

She handed them to you on a silver platter. And you said, "Oh cool. I come here every week. I love this band. Ummm... pretty crowded tonight."

She smiled politely. Nodded. And never texted you back.

I was that guy for years. Talking too much. Listening too little. Panicking about my next sentence while she was literally feeding me the answers.

Then I found 22 rules that fixed the whole thing. Rule number one: shut up and listen. She'll tell you exactly what to say.

Thats kinda creepy with the whole rose thing.

>> Yeah I know, roses aren't everybody's thing. I've used them in the (distant) past to some success. It seems like they either take to it or don't , not much in between. One chick, about six or seven yrs ago, took to it too much and started acting like I was her personal florist. I'd like a dozen yellows though; those are harder to find! Obviously not the right response, even if we did end up going out on some dates. If this one doesn't work it'll be the last time I use one. Could have easily opened w/out it now that I think of it; probably was coming on too strong. Oh well. Live and learn.

You tried! Thats number one, I probably wouldnt be able to go that far......that being said.........She gave you some typical girl bs. There is no bf, there is no long distance bf. She prob wont call, just because of how it all went.

Thats ok. You gave it a shot. She's probably missing out anyway.

>> Yeah like I said the greater victory was to actually DO it. The outcome, whether there's ever a phone call followed by a date or whatever, is not of prime importance to me. You want to be a boxer, you've got to learn to take a punch right? You want to be a Don Juan or a player you've got to learn to take hard turn-downs, soft turn-downs , calls not returned, etc. Point is you're in the game. After all, there are many many fish in the sea. Almost a shame to have the very first one you swing at be the one you end up getting stuck dating for a long time.

“The 22 Rules That Flip the Script With Women… And How You Can Use Them Tonight”

Most guys accidentally kill attraction before they even speak. They assume they need a bigger bank account, a better physique, or smoother lines. They miss the point.

Female desire operates on a specific set of psychological triggers.  Break them, and you're invisible. Follow them, and you become magnetic.

I learned this the hard way. Years of freezing up. Getting friend-zoned. Watching other guys walk away with the girl I wanted. Then I discovered a set of 22 simple rules that rewired my entire approach.

That was sooo sweeet and cuuuuute. Well you made it pass the first hurdle. The whole rose things is a lil much for a girl you don't know, but you were in the "GAME," that is ALL that matters. Do you know how many guys go through life not taking chances, not approaching girls. Good job.

Glad you took a chance man. Way to be player.

I think the rose think was afc-ish...but for your purposes no harm done. She probably sees you as a friend.....but who the hell cares...your building your way up....and in no tiime at all you will be a great "DJ"

Fantastic job! You made your move and you played the game istead of sitting in front of the computer.
You got good IOI from the girl, she told you that her bf is "very long distance"!..Haha...she called you a player and that means your delivery was smooth!
I hope she calls and you'll have another chance to show her how smooth you are. But even if she doesn't call you...you win anyways! Because the first step is the hardest..and you made that step towards where you want to be and you can't go back!

"She Liked You in March. It's October Now."

Attraction runs on a clock.

She flirted for weeks. Touched your arm. Found reasons to be alone with you. And you were careful. Respectful. Waiting for the right moment.

The moment had a shelf life. It expired around month two, and by the time you asked her out, she'd quietly filed you under "little brother."

One of the hardest lessons inside the 22 Rules: women rarely wait. Interest either grows or it decays, and nothing decays it faster than a man who never moves.

Make the move while she's still inventing reasons to be near you.

but that whole creepy stalker approach..

>>> ALRIGHT ALREADY !! lol..... j/k . No, it was my first time out in ages man, cut me slack. I will NOT, repeat will NOT, use anything remotely resembling a rose again. I've had problems w/them in the past, they're trouble (unless you're steadily dating some chick and it's just some random nice thing you feel like doing for her one day) , and they will always be trouble for guys who just want to get to know a new girl. I'm convinced of that now. :p

i know it's really hard to approach girls...right now im in a bit of a slump myself so i really know what u mean so gj and keep it up!

>> Thanks man, sure will . You too. Remember, "slumps" only last as long as we let them. If I were you I'd get out there somewhere, anywhere, today or tonight or asap and do a cold approach or two. It's like lying in a hospital bed after a bad injury man. The rehab is hard. It literally hurts like hell to do it . But the less you move , even though you feel comfortable not moving, the more the muscles atrophy and eventually you just don't regain full usage.

Advice from a female:

BAAADDDD BHHHAAADDDDD MOVE! She now thinks you're a wierdo/player/desperate for sex.

The first time you came in you should have smiled at her, showed a care-free attitude that you were just there to buy what you needed; then struck a conversation about politics (don't talk about anything related to the store because it is obvious to women that you are trying to pick them up); and then leave the store (not looking back at her, avoid saying things like "have a nice day" etc... instead say "alright bye" cuz you came to the store to buy something not to talk to her right?)

If you would have done the above, she will be impressed with you "Wow guy is intelligent, he's interested in politics etc...."

So that the next time you come back she'll think "Oooo the intelligent guy is back, I wonder if he has anything else intelligent to talk to me about"

That's when you come to the counter and talk about the weather etc.... (remember don't talk about the store, she's not important remember?). Don't come back to the store 3 to 4 days later, she will miss you and that's your cue to ask her out.

Boy I just wrote a ton. Anyway, that's what you should have done. If you want the girl to like you, don't go to the store for a week, and then APOLOGIZE to her and try asking her out. It should work.

Good luck!

Meg

>>> I don't really give too much of a f*** whether she likes me or not to tell you the truth. I just wanted to ... well you know... anyway; it's not like this was the potential love of my life or anything. The rose was not solid game , as we've established. The whole thing was essentially stupid. But, as I said, I've been out of the game for years now. But all that aside I wouldn't "apologize" to that b***** for a damn thing because I didn't do anything to apologize to her for. If anything the next time I go into that store, if she's still there, and if I haven't spoken to her since, I'd just completely ignore her. There's too much other bearded clam around to fret over one little one that the tides washed away. But if you want, Meg, next time you're in the Chgoland area I'll let you buy ME a rose, apologize to me for it later, and then take me out to dinner.

Hahaha you're funny.

No, all I'm saying is that you wasted two bucks? on a pink rose for someone who can't truly appreciate it.

Ah ok, I thought you were seriously into the girl, that's why I offered an advice to apologize because to her that is somewhat a sign of disrespect.

LOLOL WTF I just now REALIZED what you meant by "bearded clam" HAHAHA. Too bad I don't have a beard. :D

Sure, I'll buy you a rose and apologize for it later on. I'll take you to dinner at mcdonald's...where it's cheaper. :p

"The Coffee Shop Girl You Never Spoke To"

You've replayed it a hundred times. She stood three feet away, scrolling her phone. You had an opening. You composed the perfect line — after she was gone.

For all you know, she's married now. To some guy who said something. Anything.

Openers are cheap. Almost any sentence works when it's delivered within three seconds. The expensive part is the standing there, drafting and deleting, while the window quietly closes.

The "22 Rules" stripped out my hesitation. What to open with, how to keep it alive, and the one habit that costs guys more women than anything else: waiting for perfect.

I'm not that cheap of a date Meg. I'm glad you don't have a bearded clam as it allows me to go downtown with greater ease and find the hidden pearl and that's definitely going to be to both of our benefits. And by the way the rose was 6 bucks, not 2. I don't buy those cheap gas station roses Meg. It was a nice pink one. Wrapped up, with baby's breath , and everything.

Yeah, gifts are just bad mmmkay?
The topic has been beaten to death already, but if you really wanted her, you should have been just a tad bit more deceptive, just like blueangel said. Act like you are just there to buy stuff and you don't want her..... then somehow go from there to telling her she has good conversation skills or some similar bullsh-it... and boom.
The female of our species is not unlike the female of the tarantula spider species. If you don't properly take care of business, she will kill you.

"Why Women Dump the Guys Who Try the Hardest"

You paid for dinner. You drove. You said "whatever you want is fine" every single time. All the effort, no expectations.

And she left anyway — probably for a guy who makes her pick up the pizza.

Painful. Also predictable. Her mind quietly concludes that anything requiring zero effort from her is worth exactly zero. You became a free sample, and free samples get taken for granted.

The 22 Rules flip the dynamic. Small shifts that get her investing effort, money, and time in you — until SHE'S the one afraid of losing YOU.
