I am a big fan of messageboards and most of the bigger sites are using Vbulletin software. I think Vbulletin is a more feature rich package. Plus I belive it uses a database for a back end. I don't know how difficult it would be to make the switch, but it would be nice.

Also maybe look into an updated version of UBB.
