I recently accepted a new job offer for a retail sales position with a cable company for 14/hr plus bonuses, I have been in training for a week now and am regretting that i accepted the offer for such low pay.

I found out a few of my co-workers who have the same position and who are also new to the position but have similar backgrounds are getting paid $17-19/hr plus bonuses.

I wanted to renegotiate, they (co-workers) said i should wait about 2 months to prove the i can hit quotas before i try to renegotiate. That wasnt good enough for me.

I know its iffy to try to renegotiate after i have accepted an offer but they told me they had all turned down the original offers because it was too low...and they all got a call back 3 hours later with a better offer.

I ended up emailing my manager today about it:

" Dear Steven,

Hello, my name is Ken785. I was offered a position 10 days ago as a Retail connection specialist. Training is going great and I have a excellent understanding of my position within the company. However, I believe we need to discuss the issue of pay.

I am currently at a base pay of $14/hr which I didn't feel was my worth but had agreed to but i am wanting to ask for a new deal as i have been offered $17/hr + commission from another company.

I am asking that we can renegotiate as I feel the offer is below my worth. I have years of sales/retail experience, can open and close sales and I also carry a 4 year bachelors degree.

I would like to reach a new offer for the base pay for 2-6 months so I can prove (Company name) investment in me is well worth it. If I do not prove that my team and I can meet and exceed sales above the company's expectations, then you can set me back to my original offer pay. Hear from you soon - Ken "

What do you guys think? Was it a little to late for negotiations? I'm hoping to hear from him soon and hope he can match the base pay because $14 is too low for me! I know he is going to say that I agreed and signed an offer letter but I still feel the offer was really low...hopefully emailing him wasn't a mistake.

Well, if I was your boss and I got that letter I would tell you to take the other job and then I'd go out and hire somebody in this DOWN ECONOMY.

They only have one week invested in you. That's nothing to lose.

Wait a couple of months, prove you're the sh*t, and then ask. By that time you'll have a reputation and, having invested more time in you, you will be a bigger loss.

if you do more work than you are paid for, you will eventually get paid for more work than you do.

Please let us know how this turned out. Risky move and I hope it works for you, but I think you should have proved yourself and suck it up since you had excepted the offer and were content until talking to others.

I don't think your timing or communication through email was the best way of going about things.

Certainly let us know how this goes because like others and your co-workers said, I would have waited for 2 or so mopnths before bringing up the issue of pay.

I know it was a risky move. I just feel ripped off because I'm training with like 20 other people and 70% of them are dumb as$es, who can barely close a screen door, yet alone a sale...I'm pretty sure some of them are getting paid more than me too...one guy who got offered a sales lead position and doesn't even understand the material taught to him or answer questions correctly...let alone the guy can barely speak English.

I'm a as$hole in the end that accepted the low pay, downed economy or not.

Everyone is supposed to be in their stores in a week, I don't know if they'll have time to train another person in time because we work in 3 man teams, if they're missing one then they have no way of getting that covered unless they hire someone else or borrow someone from another store.

Worst case scenario, if he doesn't accept or want to negotiate, what do you think my next move should be? I want to stay with this company since I've already started but I just need a little bit of a pay fix man.

I'll continue going to the training until I hear from him.

His experience and knowledge in comparison to the dumb fvcks around him.

To the OP, good on you for asking, no one gets anywhere if they never ask. You're showing your boss that you have skills, are willing to work hard, ambitious and you are in demand from other companys.

I agree with Teflon McGee on this one. Until you PROVE to me you can out preform those other guys? You're just a whiny little college grad wanting more money waving a degree at me. Does that degree come with a client list? Did you make money for your previous employer? How much did you make for him? If you were such a hot shot at your last job, why are you here working for me?

I can hire a freshman college boy, part-time, for $10.00 an hour to do your job.
*Saves money
*Don't have to pay part-times any benefits (saves me MORE money)
*He'll be grateful for the job.

Talked to him yesterday, explained to him my experience, value and worth...he talked to his boss, my pay got bumped up about 25%. I'm happy with that. ;)

Hahaa! it just goes to show that even people on a discussion forum who advocate Support and encouragement, will still try to drag you down!

It's a big lesson to those who responded negatively to the OP, saying he made a mistake and talking with the appearance of wisdom. We can all learn a lot from this.

It always pays off to ask for more than you are given. Never settle for standard pay, standard price etc. A motivated man will demand higher pay and he will get it because he shows his boss his value.

Now don't make them regret it! Just remember one of the Laws of Success - always work more than you are expected. Soon those raises and promotions will come flying in.

Captain, you mistake the cart for the horse.

The Law of Success mandates that you do the work, create the value, solve the problem, then ask for more money.

The other posters were not necessarily being negative, they recognized his priority in taking more money over earning it.

This was not a question of taking in more money over earning it though. This was a question of negotiating the money he would receive for the future work he would do. This does not go against the Laws of Success, it's just an alternative more proactive way of building wealth.
