"How I Made Sure No Woman Ever Friend-Zoned Me Again"

She calls you when her car breaks down. When she needs help moving. When some guy she's actually dating treats her badly.

You're the listener. The reliable one. The guy who would treat her so much better, if she'd just open her eyes.

She won't. You trained her to see you as the low-effort option — the friend who requires zero risk and zero investment. Every favor dug the hole deeper.

The "22 Rules" break the pattern. You'll stop auditioning for a role she already cast and become the man she chases instead. It starts with Rule 1.

Friends,

How do I handle this?

Pursued a girl 3 years younger than me I met in a yoga class (thanks SoSuave for that tip). Things went well for a couple weeks until she told me she would be going overseas in Australia for the next 6 months, and didn't want to start anything serious immediately before leaving---she said she would be interested in dating when she got back, if I was still single. Disappointing, yet understandable. I also didn't want to "date" somebody I just met who'd be 5 thousand miles away for the next 6 months.

2 months into her overseas extravaganza, we send eachother a casual email. However, since then, we've been emailing on a weekly basis---long emails, not gushy emails, just emails telling the other person what is going on in our lives and sharing experiences. I've been doing this for a little over a month now. She's even asked me to visit---but we both know this is virtually impossible. From our emails, we are enthusiastic to talk to each other. She told me she bought me a souveneir and is always interested in what I'm doing. I always try to wait about a week before returning her email. She'll be back in 3 months.

How should I continue handling this? Here are somethings I'm thinking about:
-I like this girl and don't want to become just another friend...
-I want to tell her I like her, but I've read tips here that advise against that, and I can see why...
-I hope the reason she continues emailing me is because she likes me too...
-How should I continue communicating with her? I'm not sure if continuing with all these emails is good/sustainable, or should I stop the emails, and pick things up once she returns? Or should I just continue as is...
-Are there some things I should say/should not say?...
-I enjoy emailing with her...
-I'm not locked into this girl, but I'm still trying to find someone else I like...

I've always received great advice here.

Hope to get some good tips.

Thanks:up:

"The Coffee Shop Girl You Never Spoke To"

You've replayed it a hundred times. She stood three feet away, scrolling her phone. You had an opening. You composed the perfect line — after she was gone.

For all you know, she's married now. To some guy who said something. Anything.

Openers are cheap. Almost any sentence works when it's delivered within three seconds. The expensive part is the standing there, drafting and deleting, while the window quietly closes.

The "22 Rules" stripped out my hesitation. What to open with, how to keep it alive, and the one habit that costs guys more women than anything else: waiting for perfect.

Sounds like you are handling it just fine. She is happy with you.

There isn't much else you can do, so no sense in thinking about things you cannot control.

I would concentrate on the now, and pursue things you want. In 3 months when she is back, you can get back together. I'd offer to pick her up at the airport if she needs a ride, as it wouldn't be a big deal.

I posted the above message almost 4 months ago! Wow.

Well, I managed to keep communication alive, and it's going really well. We have a long list of emails back and forth. It's really nice to see. We emailed back and forth about 13 times each---long emails where we learned a lot about each other. I really like her. We've mentioned that we're excited to see each other and finally talk in person again.

She just got back to the USA and lives about an hour from me. But in a matter of a few weeks, I'm moving to that city for school, so I should get to see her then.

What should I do in the meantime?
-Try to see her?
-Call on the phone briefly about her travels?
-Keep the emails going?

I like the girl a lot and want to keep the connection alive. To me, it seems like we're both happy where things have progressed to.

Any suggestions? Hoping to get this girl.
