The “Yellowstone” star, also known for roles in “Band of Brothers,” “Minority Report” and “Captain America: The First Avenger,” revealed on Wednesday that he faced years of backlash in the entertainment industry due to his longstanding refusal to perform sex and kissing scenes with female co-stars.
“I’d always had in my contracts I wouldn’t kiss another woman onscreen,” McDonough shared on this week’s episode of the “Nothing Left Unsaid” podcast. “My wife didn’t have any problem with it. It was me, really, who had a problem with it. When I couldn’t do it, and they couldn’t understand it, Hollywood just completely turned on me.”
McDonough — a devout Catholic who’s been married his to his wife, Ruvé McDonough, since 2003 — said that as a result of his decision, he “couldn’t get a job” for two years and “lost everything you could possibly imagine,” including material possessions like houses.
In 2010, McDonough was cast as Wolfgang “Wolf” West opposite Virginia Madsen in the ABC series “Scoundrels.” He was reportedly fired three days into production of the pilot after refusing to engage in a simulated sex scene. He was later replaced by “JAG” alum David James Elliott.
While the 59-year-old admitted the decision came with a lot of consequences — including a battle with alcoholism — he said it was ultimately the best thing for him and his family.
“Sometimes you need to be crucified in life to realize what life is really about,” McDonough reflected during the tear-jerking episode. “It’s about family. It’s about God. It’s about what you can do to make the world a better place while you’re here for that finite amount of time.”
In addition to getting sober, he and his wife have since launched their own production company, allowing them to collaborate on multiple projects. The two of them recently appeared onscreen together in the faith-based film “The Last Rodeo.”
McDonough has also had a career resurgence on the small screen in the Taylor Sheridan-created series “Yellowstone” and “Tulsa King.”
