Website raises eyebrows among parents

BAKERSFIELD - A local mother wants to raise awareness about the blog spot with more than 32-millions users, most under the age of 22.
The woman wanted to remain anonymous but she contacted KGET-TV after she caught her child in a web of lies tracing back to the popular myspace.com.
She said the website, which was originally designed for aspiring musicians, has turned x-rated.
She described what her son was exposed to “snap shots of people, sex acts that they were taking with their cell phones and pasting on to this site, explicit context that is very inappropriate for children.” She caught her 13-year-old logging on to myspace.com and she was shocked when she checked out the website for herself.
The website says it's a place where you can meet your friend's friends, but this mother disagrees.
Local law enforcement said they haven't received any complaints about myspace.com, they do urge parents to be vigilant.
KCSO Deputy Richard Wood said, “look in the computer and see what they've been downloading, that's a good clue as to what the kids are doing on the internet.”
The website was founded in late 2003.
A representative from the website contacted KGET-TV stating they take these issues very seriously.
He goes on to say, they're working hard to stay at the forefront of user safety on the internet.
The mother who called KGET-TV says she has since taken away internet and cell phone privileges from her child.
