I'm 19 years old and I"m having a hard time trying to picking a career. Right now, I'm going to school for computer science and I'm realizing that I'm not really interested in it. I want a job that pays a decent amount and that I enjoy doing. I originally wanted to join the Army, get into Special Forces, and if I liked it join the CIA after I served my time. I found out that I can't do that now because I have asthma and it's an automatic disqualifier. Now I don't know what to do. I want to make enough money to have a nice house, a boat, the nice entertainment center, etc. At the same time I want to have a job that is enjoyable. Do you guys have any advice?

Well, from what I have heard (I have one friend in Marines and one in Canadian Army), the army is not the most pleasurable or easy experience you will undertake, so you might want to avoid that avenue.

Computer science WILL bring in the dollars but if you don't like it, don't stick yourself in a career you'll hate.

I'm in a Chemistry program and I fairly enjoy it, but I think pretty much everything will have at least some downside to it. I don't ever think that you can be 100% fully and completely satisfied with anything you do.

Fields closely related to Computer Science: math, physics. Have you tried either of those?

That's all I can really say about this.

Dont do computer science, I do computer science and I should know.

There are NO chicks in computer science. PLUS *they will prob teach you in an IT block* there will be no chicks around you either.

Your peers will mostly AFC's and you'll actually inherit their traits.

When you graduate from computer science you will be programming things that no one really cares about. PLUS your wage wont be as high as you think. (lots of Comptuer science people comming out now)

BEST case scenario is that you become JUST LIKE your lecturer.

You'll be sitting in a cubical trying to make algorithms with no social contact at all.

If your considering game programming DONT DO IT. Ive done some major projects at my 3rd year Computer Science course and the stress is damn high. Imagine living with that kind of stress every day! Also programming and debugging games is NOT as fun as playing games.

If I could redo everything id do Ba of Business majoring in marketing. You could go anywhere from there. ie Sarting your own business, get a corporate job.

Better to work for yourself *overdrive for a few years* and then start earning serious cash with your business. Best case for computer science is that you make some revolutionary algorithm and get some medal for it 6 years later.

Computer Science is a downward spiral to hermitness. Unless you can do a backflip in your social life (socialize like crazy) your life will not be in balance.

If you want the house, the boat, the lifestlye, you have to be a ****en genius *like bill gates* to get it.

Otherwise you will fail.

Better to do bussiness and exploit leverage.

*ps check out brian tracy and anthony robbins

In short, computer "science" (it's not really a science so I don't know why it got that name) blows. Hard.

Worst career choice you could possibly make. Insane competition and you're very easily disposed of. You do the math.

1.) Take five minutes out of your day and complete this online personality test:

http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp

2.) When you complete the test, write down the four-letter personality typeology it gives you. Then, go to the website below and click on your typeology.

http://www.personalitypage.com/careers.html

If you answered the quiz honestly, the "suggested careers" for your type should very closely match what you're naturally inclined to do.

This is a great way to narrow down your career options before you begin your post-college career. You may be surprised to find out how accurate it is...
