Scene: Mexican Restaurant
People: Me, Pete, Chris, Beth, and Cindy
Story:
We were with a bunch of couples celebrating one of their birthdays. The four people mentioned, along with me, are all single. The couples left to see a movie, but we all stayed.
Cindy and Beth thought the bartender was cute. They went to the other side of the bar across from us to try to get his attention. I was talking to Pete about moving to Vegas. On our side of the bar I saw two girls on the other end of the bar. One was eh but the other was a really cute. My phone rang and I had to take it because it was someone who was on the way to the bar. The two girls were blocking the bar. I excused myself as I squeezed through.
When I got back into the bar, I went up to Cindy and Beth, who were sitting there looking defeated. Just in case, I got a drink and asked if it worked out. Unfortunately, the bar tender showed no interest in them. Beth told me the two girls I walked passed checked me out and looked like they were ready to talk to me when I asked to them move over. Now, I don't think these two girls knew we all had come together. Cindy told me to go up to them quick because the more I talked to her and Beth the more time I was wasting.
I got approach anxiety while trying to cover it up by interacting with everyone for a while. I finally sacked up and went over to the two girls. I will refer to them as curly (she had curly hair) and black (she was wearing all black)
Me: Excuse me.
(both look at me surprised)
Me: What are you names?
(they are still thrown off)
(They told me their names but I really couldn't hear them. Black had an iceness about her, but Curly was more friendly. I didn't have a good feeling but decided to truck on. I decided to do a question)
Me: Have you two ever seen the shows Walking Dead or American Horror Story. I think american horror story is a lot better as far as story and scares. My friend over there (I point at Pete) thinks walking dead is better. What do you think?
Black: We really don't watch a lot of tv.
(Curly smiles but doesn't say anything. I can feel this set slipping away)
Me: What do you two do for a living?
Black: we are therapists. How about you?
Curly: How about you?
Me: I work in education. I teach English.
Curly: DO you like it?
Me: yeah, I like it.
Black: How old are you?
Me: Guess.
Black: I don't know. Just Tell us.
Me: 30. I am told I got youthful looks. (I know I shouldn't have asked this but I did) How old are you two?
Curly: 31
Black: 32
(This is where I feel I start screwing up)
Me: You don't look 31. You look 22. You look 27 (to black)
Black: I look older! (I got a smile out of her)
(I was blanking out)
Me: Where did you guys go to school?
Black: You really don't care where we went to school. You have to do better than that.
Me: I am just getting to know you. Where you guys from?
Black: Sorry, I don't tell strangers where I live.
Me: (To Curly) How about you?
Curly: same as her..I don't tell people where I am from. Where did you go to college?
Me: Buffalo.
Curly: Isn't it cold?
Me: Yeah, but there are never school closings. They know how to take care of what we freak out about around here...blizzards and stuff like that.
(Silence. Uncomfortable laughter. Then some older woman asks where I went. She and I start talking and I see if the two girls try to rejoin the conversation. After ten minutes of talking to this older woman there is no indication of them wanting me back so I get the point. I break free of the older woman and then tell the girls to have a good night)
--- I was definitely shaky but proud I broke through my approach anxiety.
What do you guys think?
