Hey guys,

I'm spending a week in Mobile Alabama doing a course for my work. Just wondering if anyone out there knows the area and can give me some tips on:

1. Best places to eat - I've only been here one day and I've yet to have a good fresh meal. Everything down here seems to be deep fried and greasy with no fresh vegetables. I'm a carnivore who loves meat but I don't know if I can spend a whole week only eating meat and coleslaw. Yuck!

2. Sights to see - I haven't started my course yet so I don't know how much time I'm going to have in the evenings but is there anything cool here to see or do? Met a girl here today who has lived here her whole life and when I asked her this question she just laughed and said "nothing".

3. Places to hang - I noticed a couple Hooters restaurants as we came in but that gets old pretty quickly. I'm not really looking to go clubbing or anything but I was wondering about cool places to have a few drinks and maybe see some live music.

4. Places to avoid - We took the rental car out for a cruise today and ended up in a pretty shady area. Definitely don't want to stumble into a bad scene.

5. Anything else I should know?

Thanks in advance.

Couldn't resist... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nda_OSWeyn8

But anyway, I went down to Mobile right around New Years 2010. I was going on a cruise that left out of the Mobile port. Only there for a night, but we went to Wintzell's Oyster House, and I will never forget that meal. http://www.roadfood.com/Restaurant/Overview/96/wintzells-oyster-house

Incredible Oysters, and a very good price, if I remember correctly. We didn't have much time to do much else, but Dauphin Street seemed to have some decent places to go. I believe that was the "historic district" of the city.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn, mostly because of its proximity to the Mobile Port, but it was decent. The top floor has a decent bar with a 360 degree view. Some extremely cute girls were there that night, but I was with my LTR ex at the time. Debated trying for the 3-some, but didn't want to piss my ex off right before getting on a 5-day cruise with her! Pick your battles haha

Go down to the waterfront and take a tour of the USS Alabama. It's a WW2 battleship. Steven Segal filmed Under Siege on it. They also have a WW2 sub and some other neat stuff to see right there as well.

Just like others have said:

Eat at the original Wintzell's downtown, Dauphin Street is where the bars are, and head east out on I-10 and check out the USS Alabama and a few other military exhibits. There are some cool little museums right there downtown like the Mardi Gras exhibits and such.

There are casinos 45 minutes away in Biloxi, MS, if you're into that sort of thing.

Not much else unless you want to go an hour or so away to the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area to chill on the beach. Mobile is the Detroit of the South.
