"She Made Her Decision Before You Finished Your Sentence"

Three seconds. That's how long it took. Your shoes. Your posture. The way you held your drink. Whether you looked at the floor or looked at her.

She already filed you away. Interesting. Boring. Safe. Bold. Before you even opened your mouth.

Everything you say after that is just her confirming what she already decided.

So stop rehearsing lines. Fix the first three seconds. Stand tall. Look up. Smile like you mean it. Walk like you belong wherever you're standing.

The words come later. The impression comes first.

I'm not even sure where to begin with this, but I desperately need help translating the situation. Let me apologize for the length of this post, but I want you guys to have a clear picture of the situation. I’ve fallen HARD emotionally for a girl in a way that I didn’t even see coming. I'm not looking for a quick sexual encounter, and then on to greener pastures. I’ve got a feeling after I explain this situation, many people here will be screaming “Abort! Abort!” And maybe that is the wise decision, but I’m mainly interested in how you guys would approach WINNING this girl over, assuming you believe there is a potential to “get the girl”.

Let me start out with the bad. I’m 36 and the girl is 21. Now let me make it worse. I’m a manager at our office and she...is not a member of management. And our office has VERY strict policies regarding fraternization. In other words, we’d possibly both lose our jobs, even though she works in a different department. And a little more fuel for the fire- she lives with her older sister, who would definitely would not approve of the situation.

Its important that you understand her general personality so that you can relate it to this situation. Her friends say she comes across as cold and uncaring, but she is actually warm once you get to know her. They say it takes alot to get past her defenses. She is notorious for not answering texts, even among her closest friends. She has told me, verbatim, “my previous boyfriends all said i don’t show them enough emotion. I don’t seem to care. But it isn’t true” She has no kids, and currently she says she has no boyfriend.

About two months ago she approached me at work, and basically said she had a crush on me. At first I figured it was a joke, or that she was trying to get ahead in the company. Without a doubt, I can confirm that neither of those are true. So, once I got past those hurdles, I decided to ask her out.
We’ve been on two dates during the week that went well. Each was supposed to be only a brief meeting at the beach, but both turned in to dates that lasted for 5-6 hours. Nothing sexual has happened yet.

But here is the problem. The mixed signals. First the good: She tells me she likes me . If I text her, she always responds. At work I constantly see her “scanning” the area for me, and she has already admitted that she does this. If I “take a day off” and give her the cold shoulder, she immediately “ups her game” and tries to see if everything is OK. Last week she cooked for me, and discreetly brought the dinner to work.

However, when I’ve asked to see her out the past FOUR weekends I’ve had no success. Perhaps my approach isn’t forceful enough. I’ll usually say “If you have time this weekend, call me and we’ll get together.” I figured this would be enough considering how much she SAYS she likes me. But she never follows through.

Out of sheer frustration, I asked her if she would prefer that we simply remain friends at work. She immediately said that was NOT what she wanted, and that she was indeed attracted to me. "I like you. Alot. I'm very attracted to you. You’re the main reason I enjoy coming to work. But I don’t know how to handle you."

When I pressed her on how she could like someone so much, but blow him off every weekend, she hesitated and said "Its complex." When I tried to get her to define "complex", she immediately became restless and her entire disposition became withdrawn. She CLEARLY did not want to talk about it. I immediately thought “BOYFRIEND”, but her friends all say that her relationship ended months ago. She is also adamant that she has no boyfriend when i asked her. For the moment, I decided to let it go. We spent the rest of the week engaged in our usual banter. Nothing overtly flirtatious or sexual, as it was the workplace. And then Friday arrived....

She walked up to me and asked what I was doing for the weekend. I told her that I had no plans, and asked her what she was doing. She responded that she had nothing planned either. I took this as a green light and said "If you're available, give me a call on Saturday or Sunday. We can get together." She nodded and said "That might be nice." As she turned away, I felt my frustration boil over.

I called her back over and asked her why she didn't simply say "Yes, lets make plans." I then decided to lay all my cards on the table. I told her that if she just wanted to be friends, this was her chance to say so. I promised her that nothing would change at work. I wouldn’t ignore her or make anything difficult for her. I reminded her that all the texts she had from me were more than enough leverage for her to put me in a very bad position.

She responded by saying that she didn't feel threatened, and that she had no problem turning a man down. She then reiterated that she was attracted to me, but that “its complicated, and I’m working my way through it.” I got called away before we could continue our conversation, and I didn’t get a chance to see her the rest of the evening. On the way home I received a text that said “Sometimes I feel like I should let you go. I cause you too many problems.” I responded by saying “Tell me what you WANT and I can make it happen.” She never responded to this text, and the next day we acted like the discussion never took place. She went out of her way to be overly kind to me. This most recent Friday she said it would be nice if we could get together on Saturday. I made a sarcastic comment about that being impossible because "Saturday is part of the weekend", and then I walked away. I received a text later that evening that said "What you think of me is important to me."

So, the questions:

1) Am I being played, or does this girl actually like me? I’ve always believed that actions speak louder than words. Whenever I’m around her, she actually seems interested. She stops what she is doing, she’ll “play punch” me. If I move in closer or slide my hand across her body she doesn’t move away, etc. But getting shot down every weekend is also an action, one that contradicts all of this.

2) If she likes me, how do I accelerate breaking this barrier? Should I be more aggressive? Should I respect the "working my way through it" line and take up a holding pattern?

3) A female friend of mine said that the combination of the age difference, a workplace romance (and thus the need to be secretive inside AND outside of work), an older sister and parents who would disapprove, probably has her "seized up like an old car engine" and she is trying to sort through everything, and is thus keeping me at arms length. Typical female bull****, or may she have a point?

I've never been in a situation with these types of mixed signals before.

"I'm Not Looking for Anything Serious Right Now"

When a woman says it, guys hear a confession. A heads-up. A scheduling conflict.

Here's the translation: I don't feel anything. Right now. With you.

Watch what happens when a man triggers actual attraction. The busy career, the recent breakup, the "not in a place to date" — all of it evaporates instantly. The same woman who was guarding her freedom is suddenly free every night.

The "22 Rules" explain why. When the right switches flip, her timeline rearranges itself around you.

Do a search for "cluster b", "bpd" and "borderline" and read up on all those threads.

I believe your emotional wellbeing and your job are at serious risk, you should tread carefully...

Thanks for the info. I read a few of the threads, along with a couple internet articles. I really don't think she falls into this category, as in almost every instance she is very composed and articulate. She doesn't have serious mood swings, i haven't caught her in a lie, and she doesn't seek out constant reaffirmation. She just goes rigid when I press her on the "complicated" issue.

Another quick glimpse into her personality:

On our first date we went to the beach, and relaxed with some alcohol. I have a pretty high tolerance, so she ended up getting hammered before me. When this happened she became talkative, and had some really funny, personal, and brilliant things to say. The next day I brought a few of the topics up and she got this look of HORROR in her eyes. She didn't remember discussing these things, and it was obvious that she was embarrassed, even though to me the subjects were trivial.

On our next date she only nursed only 1 glass of her favorite wine. When I asked her what was wrong, she said that she didn't want to make a fool of herself in front of me again. When I explained that anything she said was strictly between us, and that she didn't come across as foolish, she smiled and said "I don't want you to change your mind on that."

If anything, she seems almost OVERLY composed.

I have some experience with this.

1. Young chicks nowadays seem petrified to commit to something. They fear making plans with a guy because they're worried their friends will organise something cool to do on the weekend. In other words, she's holding out for the best offer of social interaction.
More mature people make plans and stick to them, regardless of any other offers they might receive.
This is classic: "I'd better not commit to a weekend date because I might get invited to Megan's pool party on Saturday."

2. In my deep and painful experience, any woman who said to me she has "stuff to sort out" or says "it's complicated" has always been fvcking someone else and was merely keeping me orbiting in case her "A" guy doesn't work out.
I've had this happen to me three times and twice with chicks from work.
One of these work chicks was eerily similar to your girl. She left a cake on my desk on my birthday, I went her place for dinner once and met her for drinks once and we made out both times.
Our texts were frequent and flirty. IMO, she was showing a lot of interest. But, like your girl, when I pressed her on what was happening between us, she responded with the now classic: "It's kind of complicated right now, I've got some shyt I'm sorting through..."
Then it emerged she had been fvcking another guy at work the whole time.

So, based on your story and comparing it to my bitter and similar experiences, I'd say your girl is almost definitely fvcking someone else but is trying to keep you on the back burner so she can branch swing when it fails with him.

My sincere and heartfelt advice is to pull right back and DO NOT assume the role she wants you to play.
Don't give her an ultimatum, don't pressure her, just pull back and explain you have some shyt to sort out too and leave it at that.
Ideally, she'll use the time and space to dump the other guy and come to you, but also be prepared for her to just keep being a flaky, scared little girl fvcking the tattooed loser she's attracted to but knows it's not going anywhere.

Failure to withdraw will only result in you getting badly hurt and your emotional pain will increase tenfold.

Make the tough call and pull waaaay back. If she's really, genuinely and passionately interested in you, she'll come running into your arms declaring her total devotion.
If not, you're saving yourself from many sleepless nights and heartbreak.

Good luck mate.

What are her actions telling you? Simple, she's not spending physical time with you. A girl that's into you will make time for you at any available opportunity, not make it complicated.

Plus, in a moment of complete honesty she gave u a buyer beware warning in that she is detatached emotionally, ungiving. This is what you will be signing up for, do you really want a gf like that??? So you're risking your job for a girl that's low to mid level interested in you now, to whom you already lost frame to, and on top of that has told you she is and will he unemotional. Too much risk for not nearly enough reward. Eject slowly and nicely to save your job.

"She Liked You in March. It's October Now."

Attraction runs on a clock.

She flirted for weeks. Touched your arm. Found reasons to be alone with you. And you were careful. Respectful. Waiting for the right moment.

The moment had a shelf life. It expired around month two, and by the time you asked her out, she'd quietly filed you under "little brother."

One of the hardest lessons inside the 22 Rules: women rarely wait. Interest either grows or it decays, and nothing decays it faster than a man who never moves.

Make the move while she's still inventing reasons to be near you.

I've been in your shoes. After much reflection, the answer is quite clear (for my past situations and your current).

You let her take the lead. Years ago, when I was 32, I did the same to an 18 year old. The end result was the same. I'm cutting and pasting some of your quotes.

“If you have time this weekend, call me and we’ll get together.”

----- The ball is in her court. There's no urgency and she has the comfort in knowing (cruel as it may sound) that you are sitting and waiting for her call.

----I'd suggest placing value on yourself. Otherwise she (and other women) will not.

"When I pressed her on how she could like someone so much, but blow him off every weekend, she hesitated and said "Its complex."

----- This also puts her in the drivers seat because she knows that despite her actions, you are still willing to take the passenger seat.

"If you're available, give me a call on Saturday or Sunday. We can get together."

---- If there's still a chance with this girl, you need to reverse your image. Above, you expressed another reminder that you are relinquishing control. As the male and also the older person, this is double the reason to avoid this setting.
... and by the way, keep in mind that the texting to her could backfire. If it's against company policy, be careful.

just for save side since your company have strict rules about that, look for another job, also if you do nothing at all, study a little and try to get some extra qualifications for a new job.

also next time she aproach you for something like that say you are busy the weekend, and please make that being the truth.

you guys realize this post is from July. This guy probably let his emotions get to him (which is kind of sad if you havn't even fvcked a girl yet) and most likely made a mess of things.
