Men's testosterone levels

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A new study has found a "substantial" drop in U.S. men's testosterone levels since the 1980s, but the reasons for the decline remain unclear. This trend also does not appear to be related to age.

The average levels of the male hormone dropped by 1 percent a year, Dr. Thomas Travison and colleagues from the New England Research Institutes in Watertown, Massachusetts, found. This means that, for example, a 65-year-old man in 2002 would have testosterone levels 15 percent lower than those of a 65-year-old in 1987. This also means that a greater proportion of men in 2002 would have had below-normal testosterone levels than in 1987.

"The entire population is shifting somewhat downward we think," Travison told Reuters Health. "We're counting on other studies to confirm this."

Travison and his team analyzed data from the Massachusetts Male Aging Study, a long-term investigation of aging in about 1,700 Boston-area men. Data from the men were collected for three time intervals: 1987-1989, 1995-1997, and 2002-2004.

While a man's testosterone level will fall steadily as he ages, the researchers observed a speedier decline in average testosterone levels than would have been expected with aging alone.

They hypothesized that the rising prevalence of obesity as well as the sharp decline in cigarette smoking might help explain their findings, given that testosterone levels are lower among overweight people and smoking increases testosterone levels. But these factors accounted for only a small percentage of the observed difference.

It's likely that some sort of environmental exposure is responsible for the testosterone decline, Travison said, although he said attempting to explain what this might be based on the current findings would be "pure conjecture."

The researchers used body mass index, the ratio of height to weight, to estimate obesity levels, he noted, but this is not a very accurate way to gauge the real adiposity, or fat content of the body, so it's possible that obesity might be more of a factor than it appears in this analysis.

"I think like most things that are complex, it's likely that there is no one cause," he said.

That really sucks if it is something environmental that is causing the decrease.

Probably caused by the pu$$ification of western society.

the impact of soy on testosterone is soo highly exagerated its not even funny. its a cultural thing. the one study which suggests the relationship was hardly statistically significant and wasnt replicated with the same results since.

and as far as testosterone levels being a huge factor in anything... be cautious
all of these pro man sites tend to overstate its importance.

in one study where a group of apes were allowed to develop a pecking order then the 3rd male in a group of 5 was injected with testosterone. small amounts were previously tested but showed little observable changes.
however when given huge quantities ie. 200-300% normal amount, it was noticed that the male became incredibly violent. but remained his place in the order. he was just really violent towards those below him. this affect stopped when his test returned to normal. the only way to really affect status was to inject early in the deve cycle. then a male could establish a more dominant role and it was more likely to remain

It's much more socially acceptable to jerk off and nobody makes fun of fat people. Start getting sex from women, and start getting in shape.

alright, seriously, you need to stay away from the habit of chanting cliched sosuave lines as a response to any subject that may come up. I seriously doubt this is due to men being "pus$ywhipped" by women. Maybe something in the food, or less exercise....

Umm, no. You really think men are "jerking off more" than they were 20 years ago? Get real.

You really think there are less pornstars and porno magazines than there were 20 years ago? Get real.

I meant it more in the sense that people these days are generally lazy pu$$ies. They would rather hire someone to do the dirty work rather than do it themselves, would rather sit and watch t.v. rather than go outside and play football with some friends.

Bad wording on my part.

The cause of this drop in testosterone is the use of cell phones, especially where its at almost 15 hours of the day, at the belt.

A study shows that men had significantly reduced sperm levels when leaving the cell phone clipped on the belt for hours, everyday.

If a cellphone had an effect on sperm levels, making testosterone decrease 1% a year is not hard to believe.

If your using a cellphone keep it in your hand!

Feminization, bad food quality, environmental pollution, who knows?

Either way it sucks. Let's revolt, fight the power!

I think I should leave the scientific stuff to those in the know

Anyone seen "Children of Men"? The new Clive Owen flick? Maybe its the men who will end up infertile!

But in all seriousness, I think its probably all the processed food we eat these days. Along with far less exercise. Seems like the most logical explanation.

Can anyone say.........bitter?

1. having a harsh, disagreeably acrid taste, like that of aspirin, quinine, wormwood, or aloes.
2. hard to bear; grievous; distressful: a bitter sorrow.
3. characterized by intense antagonism or hostility: bitter hatred.
4. hard to admit or accept: a bitter lesson.
5. resentful or cynical: bitter words.

I think these definitions describe yourself.

Maybe, But the "bitter" card here? "Can anyone say".....meeeh no impact?. But thanks for your concern anyway, when a chick I'm tapping turns around and calls me "bitter" I'll come see you, deal? You can help rid me of the shame and steer me straight.

I like to call it "realistic" myself.:D

But dont get too much sand in your vagina over it will ya. You know they dont give ribbons to the losers in boxing yeah? Give it time.

That guy was right, you are sounding like a bit of a loser lately Clooney, go start a thread about Diablo or sumfin.

I agree. I also think general comfort and laziness can be blamed too. Most of us in Western society have it so fvcking easy! Many, maybe even most men, sleep in a comfortable bed, sit in comfortable chairs, work under safe and comfortable conditions, relax in front of the TV, console, computer etc. A man who visits a gym regularly is rare enough, but even gyms are warm, comfortable and have showers and facilities.

I remember when I was younger I used to be the outdoors type. I went canoeing, rock climbing, I even slept in mud and rain. I remember one day my youth club went on a trek somewhere in the country and we met with some kind of navy group. We decided to play a game of "capture the flag" over about 2 miles of forest, hills and a river...no holds barred!! The tough street punks vs. the navy is how we saw it!

Whenever we encountered members of the other team, we literally beat the crap out of each other. It was brutal. I got beaten up quite badly and thrown in a stream, but I was a tough bastard and no matter how wet, cold, aching and stinging I felt, I was having fun and felt so alive!! I pulled myself to my feet and returned to base, feeling like I'd escaped from a battlefield.

The sad thing is I've got used to comfort over the years and I could never handle something like that now! I'm trying to toughen myself up again, I've even taken a late night labouring job, but it's so easy to get lazy and weak.

Get off your chair, pack your bag with 5 days food, put on your boots, and start hiking! If you live in the US, hike from New York to Maine on foot. Or Alaska to Vancouver? Seriously, you Americans and Canadians have some of the world's most beautiful outdoor environments, and you're not using any of it!

C'mon guys, I just trekked a week through unmarked forest, carrying heavy surveillance equipment, without a car, with temperature range of 5C to 30C, and 2 of those days were spent in the rain! If I can do it, why can't you?

Also, stop whining about your emotional problems. If your "best friend" is being a meanie to you, stop hanging around him! If some girl is being moody, ignore her until she acts normal! Is it that hard?

What guy?

Im just trying to help you dude, no need to justify yourself and tell me how you go around "tapping". Tap all the chicks you like, it dont stop you from being bitter. "Tapping" is a TINY part of life, surprised by 31 you havent realised that yet.

Jariel, I think we live in a far more stressful environment these days. I think that compensates somewhat for our comfort. Though stress is probably another reason for decreased testosterone.
