Yes, there are threads like these here already. So what. This is mine. I am on a masculine role model in the movies kick. I made this list for another user in a PM but figured I'd share it here as well.

These are the movies that come to mind that have had an influence on me in the last couple years. Add to it.

3:10 to Yuma. A man's movie, about being a man. Watch this ASAP.

American Psycho--Don't become a serial killer but notice the way the dude handles women (minus the killing part).

Tao of Steve--about the pardadox of the less you care and try, the more women want you. Ignore the ending.

Straw Dogs--Dustin Hoffman starts as a complete Pvssy and turns into a MAN. Powerful older film.

Training Day--Denzel is a bad person but all ALPHA.
Ethan Hawke moves from AFC to ALPHA courtesy Denzel.

The Kid Stays in the Picture-- a fun documentary about Robert Evans, a big movie producer from the 60s and 70s. Balls of steel. This is real life, and a real man.

300--men being men and this is awesome.

Gladiator--see above.

Batman Begins--turning fear into a powerful motivator.

Unbreakable--Bruce Willis has no sense of self then discovers he has a mission and becomes a man in the process.

Thomas Crown Affair (Pierce Bronsan version)--smooth, a man living his life on his own terms and a hard as nails woman melting because of it.

Peaceful Warrior--Nick Nolte is a great spiritual and masculine figure.

Dare you neglect Glengarry Glen Ross? Alec Baldwin's Blake character is uber man!

What about Toshiro Mifune and Charles Bronson in Red Sun?

Sterling Hayden's Johnny Clay in Kubricks The Killing?

Fishburne's Morpheus in The Matrix (and also badass Collin Chou as Seraph. Perhaps a better example anyway?)

I like that you threw in Straw Dogs. Peckinpah at his best.

The ultimate man's movie is High Plains Drifter with Clint Eastwood.

I also love the movie Shaft with Samuel L Jackson.

Last man standing with Bruce Willis is also a classic...

Yeah Shaft, that almost made the list. He's just a bad motherfvcker.

My Dad suggested some Clint Eastwood movies, I'll look into that one.

ABC! Wow, yeah, I must have neglected that one only because I've seen it so many times. Yeah, that's way up there.

David Mamet writes great shyt.

A movie I saw recently was "Edmond", with William H. Macy, another Mamet work. There's a story about a guy who one day goes from AFC to something really messed up, but it's sure about breaking away from the matrix. I'll have to check out the others you suggested.

I'm a big Samuel L. guy but man, you guys need to see the original Shaft with Richard Roundtree. THAT is one bad mutherfvcker.

Speaking of Sam Jackson, what about Jules Winfield or Mace Windu?

Bill Macy and Mamet are very very close. Check out Heist with Gene Hackman. Great flick and the chick in it is smoking hot!

Edmond didn't make my c0ckles stand up but it was still cool. Oleanna was good but distracting because of the chick acting in it.

Heist is good as well, it's in my collection, along with both Shafts. (haven't seen shaft in africa).

Mace Windu... I grew up worshiping George Lucas and man, enough time has elapsed that I can say the prequels weren't the originals. Sam Jackson has so much personality, but it was totally restricted in those films. So I'll raise you Black Snake Moan.

Speaking of, at this time I'd like to add "Hustle and Flow" to the list. A guy getting a little older who thinks he has no future, then discovers his passion and runs with it.

Yes to all.

I love the whole lone gunman motif as well. It was mastered in the western but there are still modern revivals that portray the ulitmate tough guy. Not only are they well equiped and skilled to beat out their rivals, but they understand their limits. When things don't go their way they never stop thinking and over come. It's what we know as "classic cool."

Fistful of Dollars is my favorite movie of all time.

What about Brad Pitt in Fight Club?

3:10 To Yuma....yes! Great movie. Christian Bale is the man's man. I mean, come on. The guy still escorted a crazy killer with only a shotgun even though the deadliest gang was outside waiting for him. I mean, talk about balls of steel.

Watch Leonardo DiCaprio in The Departed, Gangs of New York, and The Aviator.

Bruce Willis and Sam Jackson in Pulp Fiction.

Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan.

Eric Bana in Troy and Munich.

Gattaca

Its the ultimate DJ movie.

There is nothing more DJ than standing up and becoming more than society says you can be or wants to allow you to be and that is the underlying message of this movie.

Ethan Hawk and Jude Law's characters in the movie aren't overly masculine but both characters do for the most part feature intense focus, sacrifice, heart and determination which is all part of being a man.

I like Gattaca, I haven't seen it since I've been on the boards. I should re-watch it in this new context.

John Rambo.

*edit*

Oh, yeah... 300 was a really bad movie with no point made by rich fat cats in order to sell tickets. Go watch "The Warriors" instead. Pay close attention to the relationship between Swan and Mercy. Cool ****ing movie.

Also, "Peaceful Warrior" was directed by a convicted child rapist-- Victor Salva. I'll pass on watching one of his movies, thank you! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Salva

Sorry, but some of yours are really dumb and over-the-top. Remember these are just movies, a lot of these characters would be ridiculous in real life.

Best movie character is Harmonica from Once Upon a Time in the West.
"I'm not a business man. I'm just a man."
"A dying breed."

Roddy Piper in They Live

lead character in The Warriors, the one who stayed asexual throughout. If you pay attention, you'll notice the demise of every other character came as a result of treacherous women.

Arnold Schwarzenneger in Predator

DeNiro in Heat

lead character in Hustle and Flow

----

But this is all abstract, the greatest real man is Glencoffe Johnson, full-time construction worker and part-time World Champion. "I don't claim to be the best, but I'll fight anybody who does." THATS A BAD MUTHA****A.
