Nick Waters went where very few men have gone before when he decided to watch a string of "chick flicks" in hopes of better understanding the opposite sex.

But then he took it a step further, deciding to document the whole experience on a blog, entitled 30 Chick Flicks in 30 Days: One Guy's Exploration of Romance Through Movies Loved by Women.

Waters, 28, is a regular guy living in a small town in southern Oklahoma who has been married for seven years to his wife, Nicci.

"Nicci and I were watching a chick flick last July, on her birthday," says Waters, "and I turned to her and asked, 'Wouldn't it be cool to watch 30 chick flicks in 30 days?'"

Nicci was thrilled by the idea, and before he could second-guess himself, the idea was sprung. "I brainstormed with some trusted people and had them help me build a Web site," he says.


Waters had rules for the selection of movie titles and how each movie would be viewed and reviewed.

"Once the Web site went up, I only needed people to suggest movies to watch," says Waters. "I didn't have any real requirements for the movies The only requirement was that the films be from 2007 to the present. I left it up to everyone else to decide for me what they thought a chick flick is."

Waters whittled the list of eligible titles down to 30 and on Jan. 15, 2010, beginning with "Waitress," he watched one of the chick flicks each day with Nicci. That was part of the deal, says Waters, "So if I had questions or wanted to discuss things I saw, I not only had a woman's perspective, but I had my wife's perspective."

Some of the other titles included "Mamma Mia!," "Nights in Rodanthe," "27 Dresses," "Sex and the City," "Leap Year" and "Made of Honor." At least for some of the viewings, Waters had company. "We had watch parties for several of the films," says Waters. "It varied from one to two people, and for some we had up to 20 people, mixed gender."

It's hard to envy Waters for what he must have endured. ("Nights in Rodanthe"!) And we suspect that most guys won't be quick to follow his lead, although Waters encourages others to take the 30 Chick Flicks Challenge. But Waters says everyone has been supportive, "even the macho guys who said there's no way they'd do it."

The challenge wrapped up on Saturday, Feb. 13, when Waters and Nicci watched "He's Just Not That Into You."

So what does a man say after getting bludgeoned with romantic comedies, tearful embraces and estrogen? "Love is tender," says Waters, summing up what he took from the 30 films. "And any real relationship is based on forgiveness, compassion and vulnerability."

Waters tells us that people have suggested a corresponding challenge for Nicci. After what Waters just went through, we suggest that she begin watching action flicks with him, beginning tomorrow, starting with "Blade Runner."

True, you need forgiveness and compassion. But that is not enough. You need the power, strength, courage, and leadership, as well as the money.

Nick Water's fatal flaw lies in his assumption that a girl's ideal man is the one portrayed in Hollywood movies.

Mr. Waters, so then by analogy, your ideal girl is the one portrayed in porno movies?

Silly way to go about it, all he had to do was get in the mind of a writer of this pap.

It sells, it caters to a market there is a formula for it.

No idea why a guy would logically think that watching a movie, written to a money making formula repeated 30x would give him some revelations like the movie is real and not the product of some fantasy derived from someones imagination.

This is like watching mainstream rap music videos to try to discover how to become rich and surrounded by chicks.

These videos usually follow a very simple mould, without looking up the critera, its clear they usually follow: either:

A: Man is geeky, friends girl - Man changes and conforms to win girl - End they both live happy ever after.

B: Girl meets guy - Girl has many insightful revelations about herself - i.e her bum looks big (see Bridgette Jones) Girl gets another offer from a man, girl has to choose - She fuc*s the bad boy and marries the nice guy - Happy ever after.

C: Girls are materilistic spend thrifts, with no consequeces, i.e the real world doesn't apply - the best handbags, e.t.c Fantasy princess mentility - Girl finds out she is in financial difficulty, low and behold a rich man comes out of the wood work - and marries her - Happy ever after.


I'm still waiting for the one, where a manic comes out of a cupboard and slaughters the oh so fluffy cast and leaves them in bloody pulps and the credit rolls. Or the one showing a single mother living in destitue due to her spending spree of useless shi*.

Jesus we even had a film about a prostitue meeting a rich guy and low and behold happy ever after.

Simply put: Woman acting any way they please, always meet the guy of her dreams - Film ends with both skipping to the white picket fence and big house.

They are simply emotional roller coaster rides.

If the guy had any clue he would realize it's simply chick crack - with the writers dropping in emotional fuelled tat to keep the womans interest peeked.

I forget another one:

D: Guy is a bad boy cool mother - girl is the next door type - To win guy, girl gets a make-over, turns into a diva, guy gets a make-over too, turns into a more mushy version of the Alpha male - Both live happy ever after.

I think it's funny that he watched all these movies so he could better understand women, but in the end he just turned into a dried-out vagina. Men can do really fvcking stupid things.

His next project should be wearing bras for a month. Maybe he'll learn that "breasts are the spiritual part of a woman's heart" or some bull5hit like that.

I enjoy trashy chick flicks now and then but not even I would watch 30 of them in a row. Fucuk that. A lot of girls don't actually buy that crap.

Love can have it's tender moments though...
