How long does malaria stay with you. I have heard if you treat it quickly you are fine but others say it stays with you for life. So is it just certain types of malaria that stay with you or is it do to lack of treatment or what?

unless you were recently out of the country or you were never vaccinated as a kiddo, i think your chances on catching malaria are very slim.
malaria has not been an epidemic in so long in the usa, that most of us know very little about it.
from what i can recall about learning about it,it's a tropical diease and i think mosquitoes spread it and you get a high fever and chills that you can die from. once you catch it, i believe you either die or continue to have it long term which may build up immunity for it.
but i haven't been taught anything about malaria since i was in grade school so i may have the info wrong.
you should google it if you are doing research on it, and you should speak to a doctor if you think you have it.

Pennkitten, I don't believe there is a vaccine for it.
But unless you travel where malaria happens then there is not a lot to worry about.
If you do be sure to see a doctor and get some malaria pills (usually doxy) and take them every day.

I was in Africa for a few months and I never used a mosquito net or took malaria pills and didnt catch it. Someone chastized me the other night for that but while I was there a bunch of people got malaria and took the medicine and they were ok, just like having a nasty cold. Im just wondering if there is long term affect of malaria if treated, I will be returning to Africa whenever I get the chance.
You can ask your GP for prophalytic malarial drugs before you go back. And you should use malaria nets and mosquito spray if you know you're going to be in an area where there is a high incidence of malaria. Your contact at the place can probably tell you if you are going to be in one of those high risk areas.
As far as I know, there are no long term effects if you catch malaria once. Most antimalarial drugs can treat it very effectively and complete recovery is guaranteed.
If you don't want to take those prophalytic drugs (they can be expensive) then just use basic safety precautions like moquito nets, sprays, etc. Rather be safe than sorry, eh?

One guy I knew got it while we where in Africa and there weren't even any mosquitoes around.
The is no way I'd travel in Africa without malaria pills.

I was taking lots of vit C and fish oil, maybe that had something to do with it....
I am honestly a little medicine phobic, I dont know what kind of effects taking anti malaria meds for ninety days straight would have, but mosquito nets arent harmful so I should probably do that next time I go back.
From what I saw on webmd there are four types of malaria and none of them are lifelong if treated.
Maybe the reason there were no mosquitos around is because they all died of malaria hehe.

I traveled to Guatemala and I met several Americans who were on prophylaxis but since I had done my research and checked with the U.S. State Department recommendations, I knew that I would not need it.
