You need both. Girls have high standards because most fit guys are up for banging a reasonably attractive girl. And most fit or handsome guys develop confidence naturally through the more action they get.
Confident fit guys have 10x more chance with almost any girl than the average wannabe PUA with some 'game' who is not in shape and/ or lacking self esteem/ confidence. Some PUA's who are overweight make up for their lack of physical attractiveness by wearing very sharp looking suits and shoes, maybe even a gold ring, that all make them look rich without them having to say anything. And even then the rich and successful look only works on some girls not on others. Some girls just WANT a fit guy as much as most of you guys won't accept an ugly girl, just a fact.
It seems you may have looks but you seem very inexperienced with dating girls and have some kind of social anxiety issue. Get more of a social life and get used to chatting to girls not just as missions but also as friends, make a frame in your mind that chatting to a girl is as natural as hanging out with your best friend. At the same time realize that as she is a girl then you need to keep your game up and don't be too honest or forward with anything she might interpret as beta.
It's much easier to become better at pickup if you have the basic requirements of physical fitness/ success (or both), nice clothes and confidence all there.
