Why "Whatever You Want" Keeps You Single

She says the movie looks dumb; you suddenly agree. She tests you with a little attitude; you apologize for nothing.

You think you're being easy to get along with. She reads something else entirely: a man with no edges. Nothing to hold on to. No friction, no tension, no reason to wonder what he really thinks.

The "22 Rules" taught me to push back — playfully, calmly, without needing her approval. Strange things happened after that.

Long story... Bottomline, is she crazy? Or did I F it up? I hope its length doesn't bore you...

Background: Both of us are 23 years old, we met in a college engineering class, had a lot of similar interests, ended up going on a few dates and things slowly turned into a strong interest for eachother.

Before she left to go to europe, things weren't official, but we were definetly into eachother. She had stayed with me a few nights at my apt on campus, we had already kissed, etc. The night before she left, I drove to see her. We went to the peir, had a nice evening, cuddled, etc, and parted with what seemed like a full hour of her in tears, and me feeling too horrible to just leave her crying.

The next day she flew to Europe for her 3 month working abroad adventure. Over the course of the 3 months, we e-mail eachother often, nearly everyday, talking about everything and nothing. She telling me she misses me, and how she isn't used to missing someone. In a few of our e-mails, we both talked about wanting to pick things up where we left off, and her telling me it is hard to find a good thing and once you do you have to keep it close and continue to pursue it. She also tells me she wished she could have asked me to wait for her to return, but couldn't expect that of me. Her thinking "expecations lead to dissapointment" Smart girl... I wish I had known earlier. Of course, this girl being a 9+ in my book, I was waiting and hoping... First mistake, I know. Anyway... I recieved many postcards as well, telling me she wishes I was there with her to enjoy in all of her adventures and see all of the beautiful sights and how much she missed me. I only get 2 phone calls from her though. After the first one, she said she was surprised I answer, and was intimidated by calling me. By the end of the 3 months though, she was reassured (as was I) that we were both still really into eachother.

So, she gets back.... I don't even get a phone call or an e-mail letting me know she arrived safely. (lots of reasons, im sure) She called me a few days later, and left a message wishing me goodluck on a competition I was partaking in. I return her phone call, and got a hold of her. We chatted for a while, and the whole conversation seemed somewhat awkward and distant. We ended the convo agreeing we would meet up the next week when school started.

That Monday, I text messaged her to see when she was free, she replied to call her when I was out of class. No problem, called her and got a hold of her. I told her to come over to my apt to hang out. She came, and things were like they were before anything happened. Hands to ourselves, shyness, awkwardness, etc. I didn't move in to kiss her, either. It was late, and she had to leave to drive home (90 miles) for work early the next morning (5am). I told her we should do something when she was free, she agreed and said she was free friday or sat. Of course, she had class wed too. So being an AFC, I texted her in class on wed, just saying hey. Got a reply back. Sent a message asking her what she was doing that night. No reply. Sent another message later that night, telling her I missed her. Late that night, she messaged me telling me I was funny. She then called soon after. I asked if she was out of class (her late class ended at 9pm) and she said she got out early and went to get dessert with one of her friends (guy, of course). No biggie, she has no guy friends, and had told me all about this one. So I ask where she is now... already 40 miles away, half way home. Okay, cool. She still said she wanted to do something on friday or sat...

Friday mornining I was working on my car... I call her that afternoon to see what's up. She was doing homework and said she would call me back when she was done.

Saturday morning arrives, and I am frustrated. I tell myself I am just going to call her and tell her I am on my way and to expect me in an hour. Of course, as soon as I saw her, id lay on a huge kiss, and all would be well. Sadly, she never answered that morning... and my dumb@ss called another 4 times... She finally called back. I was upset, for no good reason... but she could tell. She said she was out running and her phone was in her car... I told her I was on my way down there... she said no. She still had homework to do. I was silent for a minute. And then she tells me she senses some hostility and was gonna go work on her homework. I politely said, okay, I'll talk to you later.... So... of course... that wasnt good enough for me. an hour later I text message her asking if she was really busy, or if she just didnt want to see me. She replied "I am really busy, and when I have free time, I have alot of areas to spend it... friends, family, homework, me... I dont think I can give you what you seem to need." Me being scared all to hell, reply with "i think you have me confused... these last few days I have just been trying to see where we stand... no expectations." And left it at that.

I didn't call her for 6 days... the following friday she called me on her way home from her last class. We chatted for 30 minutes or so as if nothing weird happened. Talked about school, her work, etc. Right when we ran out of things to talk about, I told her I may have to go, as I was recieving another phone call. Phone call ended. Somehow, I felt good about having some control finally.

This time, I could only wait 2 days to call her. I ended up calling on sunday evening, when I knew she would be off work. I got her voicemail, and left a pleasant message, asking how work went, and for to give me a call back sometime. That was yesterday. no word from her.

SO... how much trouble am I in? I know I screwed up a few times, obviously... but what happened here??? Only days before she got back, I recieved a postcard telling me she missed me and how I should have come out there with her, dated less than 2 weeks prior.

Stop presenting evidence. Start flipping switches.

Got it..

How would I go about bringing up something like her crying in a conversation?

Why would you bring it up? She's a girl, she will be emotional. For gods sake don't talk to her about her emotions.

Reading you initial post I am curious about something.

Have you had sex with her or not? It sounds like maybe there was initial interest from her, which led to some making out, but you didn't strike while the iron was hot. So she leaves for Europe and her interest in you fades since you didn't bind her to you physically.

3 Months is very long. People change a lot during a time period like this especially in a foreign land meeting new people and doing things they havent done before.

Its not suprising therefore, that if there was interest it was lost over that time and experience.

For me any girl who says she wants to "travel" as in live in a foreign or far away land for a long time or study abroad or do something like that is an instant disqualification. I mean if she just wants to take some vacations shortly and see other places for a week or two at a time thats no biggie since that leaves the opportunity open to travel WITH her, but anything alone like this would be a no go for me, percisley for this very reason.

I asked because the first reply suggested doing that...

We did everything but have sex, on multiple occasions. We were there, but I felt like I would become too attatched if we had gone any further. I didn't make it uncomfortable, I just didn't go any further than I thought I could handle with her leaving in a weeks time.

Before we even began dating, I knew she was going on this trip. I realized it could become bad, but her traveling trip was planned months before anything happened between us and to me, she was worth the risk (I know, horrible thinking there too). She had told me multiple times that there was nothing keeping her at home when she planned this trip, and when I came along, things changed and now she didn't want to leave me behind.

I should also note that she told me that I was only the second guy she had stayed the night with, her first being a serious 2 year+ relationship that ended nearly 2 years ago. She said that it scared her a little - the idea of her becoming attatched to me.

What truely confuses me is, unlike you suggested, all of our correspondence was wonderful. She showed extreme interest in picking things up where we left off and pursueing a relationship when she returned. She gave me zero signs that she was losing interest, that is until her arrival back home.

“The 22 Rules That Turned Me From Invisible to Irresistible With Women… Starting Tonight”

You can skip the expensive cars, the fancy clothes, and the endless gym selfies. Completely unnecessary.

I used to freeze the second a beautiful woman looked my way. Frustrated. Awkward. Watching other guys walk away with the girl while I stood there tongue-tied.

Then I discovered 22 simple rules that rewired my entire dating life. The anxiety vanished. Conversations flowed effortlessly. Women started chasing me for a change.

These rules trigger a woman's subconscious attraction switches. And you can start using them tonight.

From your description in the first post, she didn't really contact you when she got back and when you did talk with her it seemed awkward.

There doesn't seem to be any event, unless im missing something, that would have had her having high interest while away but then none when she got back. She obviously lost interest when she was away, otherwise you would have been high on her call list when she returned. If you were away for 3 months and felt like you did for her, wouldnt you want to hang out as soon as possible on your return.

That is what I was afraid of. Is there any hope for me? I am more concerned that she was just super busy that first week, and my saturday full of phone calls dropped her interest way down, ruining whatever chance I did have.

I don't know, I just have a hard time thinking she could change so drastically from her e-mails and postcards to the first time I see her again. Is it time to just give up, or should I wait for her to call me and then ask her on a well planned date? Any suggestions that would help spark her interest in me again?

If you'd believe it, her class ended early today and she actually called me! Me, with my new found skills, had already planned a dinner outing, place, and time, and asked her if she was interested in going. She said that would be nice and agreed to go.

This time, she actually called before getting to her car. She was only a few hundred feet from my apartment and I was able to see her out my window when she called. Almost as if she was wanting me to do something with her tonight?

Anyway, I took her to dinner and we had a pretty good time. I stayed relaxed, struck up some decent conversations, and kept the good convos going strong with lots of eye contact and thoughtful comments, always listening. I threw in some occasional affectionate touching, etc. She seemed comfortable and relaxed the whole night as well (probably because I was fairly comfortable?). I drove her back to campus and walked her to her car. We talked some there, and I was gathering up the nerve to kiss her... then of course, she started talking about a new employee at work who was pissing everyone off... she got back to talking about positive things and was being somewhat flirtatious, but I couldn't move in to kiss her on the lips... I was too much of a wuss. I gave her a nice kiss in the cheeck and a hug... She also seemed very enthusiastic about hanging out again. I didn't tell her I'd call her, but I told her to let me know when she was free next, as her schedule was more likely to free up than mine. I don't know if that was a mistake or not? I sure don't want to be the one always calling, but I want to make sure she knows I still want to hang out when she is free, of course, not making myself always available either.

As I have learned, I am staying grounded, and am trying not to become super excited just because I got to see her... I already know that is a mistake. I am glad to know she isn't totally creeped out by me, and hopeful that things continue.

So yeah, an improvement? What is the next move to take here?

you know it seems like she is driving a long ways to meet up with you. you could always say "hey since its so late, call me when you get home so i know you made it safe."

once that stuff starts, the phone calls usually start pouring in.

She was on campus (where I live) for class. But yeah, I should try that next time.

"I just moved here from Florida."

That sentence contains at least five follow-up questions she WANTS you to ask. Where in Florida? What brought you here? How long have you been in the area? What do you miss? How does it compare to here?

She handed them to you on a silver platter. And you said, "Oh cool. I come here every week. I love this band. Ummm... pretty crowded tonight."

She smiled politely. Nodded. And never texted you back.

I was that guy for years. Talking too much. Listening too little. Panicking about my next sentence while she was literally feeding me the answers.

Then I found 22 rules that fixed the whole thing. Rule number one: shut up and listen. She'll tell you exactly what to say.

Just pull back a bit. Stop being so needy, start being more fun. Have fun outside of her, when she calls tell her about it, and then set up a date.

Next time you are with her intimately, make a move. I am always surprised how far girls will let me go. This one girl that came over to my house (I didn't even know she had romantic feelings for me)... we were watching tv, she was complaining about her neck (she fell while skateboarding), I told her I would give her a neck massage & gave a damn good one (cuz I have been taught by professionals), then afterwards started stroking her hair, leaned in for a kiss, felt her entire body, told her how sexy she was....She would bat my hand away from her crotch, and would say stuff like "my pants stay on tonight...", but she never said 'no' and her body language was telling me she was into it, so I never stopped. It was like a game (& was damn fun).

Eventually she gave in, and this was the sms I received the next day:

"I`m going to call you later! I had fun last night ;-)" The next night we proceeded to do it all over again ;)

So yeh...this is like completely deviated...nevermind...lol

DJNoob: I'll give you my input, but I have a very important question for you.

Why in the hell were you not meeting/banging other girls while she was away on a regular basis?

This would have helped you stay in control of your emotions and more on the indifferent side than the one-itis needy side. I know you like her quiet a bit, but you had only been on a few dates before she left for Europe, that's nothing!!!

Anyways, it seems like this girl is still interested enough to call you and want to hang out with you, so all is not lost...yet. I don't think I really need to get into how calling a lot is a pure sin, your a bright guy, seems like you already recognized that error even before you did it. However this definitely put her in the driver's seat. She now knows that you are sprung on her and that is NOT GOOD because it takes away the "challenge" aspect which is the single aspect that keeps girls highly interested in a guy.

While things seem to be back on some solid ground, I think you need to understand one important key. A girl should compliment your life, not BE your life!!! If this girl stopped calling you its evident that you would be a complete wreck!! You need to get use to be #1 in your life!! When you take care of #1, then you can worry about #2, 3 and so forth. In fact you should probably take notes from this girl, because she has her priorities completely in check while you are over analyzing her intentions. So what do you do to regain your composure??

I think you should take a step back, and breathe from this situation. Spend a weekend hanging out with your buddies and interacting with other girls. I think the biggest mistakes (I've been guilty of it in the past) guys make when they start dating someone they really like is they cut off all the other people in their life. A relationship is all about s-l-o-w-l-y getting to know someone. Most people rush relationships by:

-hanging out too often
-calling too often
-becoming predictable
-becoming emotionally dependent on the other person
-not having an outside life

Don't do this!! No matter how much you want to see her on a particular night, hang out with your friends instead every once in a while. Then when you do hangout with her, be fun, be exciting make her want to see more of you!! Lastly, when you hit a bump in the road, don't act, just relax!! For example when you called her to hangout on Friday and she said she was doing homework but never called back, RELAX, maybe something came up, wait it out and let her call you. I think your starting to regain self control but if she acts a bit distant again don't panic and think the worst. She seems like a cool girl, don't blow it by being a chump.

I think your doing fine now. But remember she's got one strike against her for showing low interest by not returing phone calls, if she acts up again you might want to start looking for another girl.

I'll definitely take the advice to heart, particularly keeping myself busy hanging out with people other than her for some time. I can see how that would help. Deep down I know things might not work out, so continueing to interact with other women is something I really should start doing more. I am always telling myself these things, as if I already know better, but like everyone says, it takes alot of practice to be able to control all of the emotions that control your actions... I'm slowly getting there...

I just got an e-mail from her thanking me for taking her to dinner and letting me know she had a good time. She also included her class schedule to see if we have any breaks at the same time. She ended with "If I dont talk to you have a great weekend!!"

Fortunately, I get out of class tomorrow at 11:00am and she has a lab until 2:00pm. I was going to ask her if she would like to hang out tomorrow after her class and go out and do something fun (suggestions?? It is supposed to rain, but we are both the puddle jumping types!) and then... reel her back to my emtpy apt to hopefully 'pick things up where we left off' so to speak.

I know I need to have a plan before I ask, but I am out of ideas. We've done all the usual things, bowling, ice skating, air hockey (her favorite), mini golf, etc. Unfortunately, the beach is an hour from here, and so is any sort of nature. I truely am horrible at this, but I know I HAVE to choose the location before I ask.

Any help is appreciated.

EDIT: I am an idiot... I am already letting my emotions screw me over... I am not going to ask her to do anything today unless she calls me and wants to hang out.. that is, if I am not already busy.
