I saw the mini-series way back in the day and had been meaning to read the book for a while now. Finally read it.

Well, other than being a fantastic story, the author is brilliant when it comes to relationships between the men and women. It's got it all. It's copyrighted in 1985 and won the Pulitzer in '86. So it seems Larry McMurty was a man ahead of his time, he knows women and what makes them tick and what makes them not tick. :)

I don't want to give too much away so I'll just say that I highly recommend it.

Lonesome Dove has to be my all time favorite book I have ever read. In fact, I've read it multiple times over the years. I get something new out of that book each time I read it.

I also recommend the sequels, with the same characters. Streets of Laredo, Dead Man Walking, and Comanche Moon. They are not as great as the first one, Lonesome Dove, but still excellent reads.

Great recommendation. Gus McCrae is the ultimate ladies man, imo. The dialog back and forth between him and Call is brilliant.

I read Dead Man Walking back in the day and it has to be my all time favorite western. Haven't read the other ones but I will some day.

Gus is great, the charmer, drinker, gambler, womanizer.....my idol :D

I agree the dialog between the two can be hilarious and brilliant at other times....great story.

Yes, the books and tv show were all awesome. very well cast too.
Tried re-watching the mini series on Netflix.....let me tell you, although the casting seemed to be spot on, directing has come along way since those days....so far, I've only re-watched the first of the four part series, it seemed to follow the book pretty well but, as far as some of the secondary relationships, it seemed to miss some of the key points....

The book dives in deep, and doesn't seem to miss a thing.

What do they say....the book's always better.
