One guy told me once about his way of dealing with situation like that. He had a nagative mother. One day he told her that he will not tolerate any negative things being said to him by her. Each time she tried to bring up something bad - he walked away or told her to not do so. It was hard at the begginning but after some time it worked out - he wasn't bombarded with negativity and she felt better.

Try this approach.
