What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

You can do a lot of things if you pay a lawyer. But the irony is that if you had the money to pay a lawyer, you'd have the money to pay the tickets.

In the eyes of the state, you are the bad guy until they get their money. And they are broke; they need your money badly. I'm just guessing, but I would think that they would want you to make at least a partial payment and set up a payment plan before you ask them to do anything nice for you, such as the drive to work permit. Plus, you probably have to pay them extra to get it.

Owing money to the government at any level is the worst kind of debt. They can mess with your life much more than a typical creditor. Your scenario is one in which even the worst private debt is still going to be better. I'd rather max out my 27% APR credit cards than owe the state money. Unless it's from a loan shark who will break your legs if you don't repay, my advice is to borrow the money from anyone you can and get your debt to the state paid off. They will make your life hell until that happens.

I almost faced the same situation, except I had a legitimate reason for not paying.

The tickets they gave me were illegally issued by the parking enforcement person.

I parked legally with tickets shown and I got four tickets over a three week period.

I didn't pay, and eventually the $50 tickets became $210 each, totalling around $840.

I went into city hall and appealed with all the evidence.

They rejected the evidence.

So I went to my local representative and showed him the evidence.

And since then I haven't received one piece of mail from them.

If they want to steal my money, they are going to do it a less cowardly and more dangerous way.
