I was going to say something similar. We (the US) basically beat Japan to within an inch of its life, right or wrong. I can see how being annihilated, and losing that generation like you said, then occupied for a bit, then basically set free would mess with the national psyche. They got their shyt together as an economic force, but it's like their manhood never recovered. Even the old Godzilla movies were metaphors of atom-bomb anxiety reprising itself.
