A few of my mates are at a music festivals, a few are abroad on holiday, and the rest have no money. I don't fancy spending five hours on the internet and then going to bed but going into the city for bars and clubs on my own isn't really a recipe for success is it?

Well, if you prefer sticking here, on the computer, do so. Maybe you dont go "clubin" but you can go see a movie, by yourself, buy some groceries, whatever, but getting out.

I've never been clubbing on my own, so I can't comment on that. But as far as your friends having no money goes, me and my friends (21 year olds ) still watch movies at each others houses now and then. Or you can play cards. Anything really. Not everything costs money.

If you want to meet women on your own, and you're confident enough. Try browsing around book shops. It's a relaxed atmosphere. Go to gym, or take up karate or some other hobbies where you can meet more ppl to hang out with.

If I wanna go out, and I can't hook up with anyone, I go alone. It's great fun and someone on here mentioned it's the mark of the true DJ.
Just do it. Talk to anyone/everyone. Score some chicks. Enjoy.
