It fell into a cesspit.

The phone was brand new. As the South China Morning Post reports, it cost 2,000 yuan (around $320).

... her husband jumped in. He was overcome by the fumes.

LOL..this remind me of the time my 3rd to last ex was taking out the garbage and when she threw it into the dumpster and her purse accidentally went in with it. Her comment was, "I know some guys who would have climbed in there to get it". Funny thing is I stuck around and figured out a way, without her help, to get it out of there without either of us having to go in there. I almost strangled her. What I should have done after that comment was go inside and leave her to deal with it herself. There was no way in the fvck I was going to climb into an 8x8x8 dumpster at night, in winter. I think that was either our second to last or last night together, lol.
