I think it depends on the situation. A lot of people don’t have someone to share their experiences with. Find someone that can relate to the situation you are dealing with. When you do, you’ll realize your experience is not that unique and you just needed someone to listen. Some therapist can be detrimental and quite slimy. Consider they are getting paid good money each visit. They could milk you for cash for years telling you that you need to come back for more “work.”
I’ve always found it funny that people go to a Priest for marital advice. They abstain from sex and are not allowed to get married. Probably the last person you should consult for marital advice. Same goes for people without kids giving you advice on raising children, fvck off! Once you actually have a child we can talk. Talking to other parents is eye opening and also a relief that you are not alone.
I know a couple where the woman has gone to therapy for decades, yet she doesn’t seem to change her ways. Now they are going to couples therapy. Both around 50 years old. These people have permanent childhood baggage and are not going to change. Woman is trying to get a therapist to get her partner to change. They need to accept who they are and deal with it or split up already.
