It has little to do with that really. There was unemployment insurance, social security, disability and probably welfare before the 50's to about the 70's and marriage was still functional. What really happen was affirmative action for women in employment and education. And the social policies/rules with no fault divorce and feminism.taiyuu_otoko said:Back in the old days, marriages were a lot more stable because there was NO government safety net.
There's a strong correlation between how many "benefits" and "protection" you can get from governments and how less attractive "marriage" is.
Marriages are rarely about love. Sure they start that way, but they are held together by partners who share common goals, and work together to achieve those goals.
This is actually the foundation of human society, and why humans came to dominate the planet from an evolutionary standpoint:
Sexual Division Of Labor.
Before the rise of swelling governments that promised voters anything and everything, families, centered around stable marriages, were the bedrock of society.
Back then, there was no welfare, no free health care, no unemployment insurance, no minimum wage, no guarantees.
In that environment, being a member of a strong family whose members (husbands, wives, kids, and to an extent, neighbors) had each others back was all you had.
Leaving the family simply because you weren't feeling "fulfilled" was simply not an option. It wasn't even a consideration.
Now with world governments promising anything and everything, and handing out welfare benefits and foodstamps and subsidized housing to anybody and everybody, those days are long, long gone, never to return.
The support of the STATE has taken place of the family.
And the rise of the STATE is directly responsible for failed marriages, broken homes, out of wedlock births, and the subsequent rising crime rates eventual destruction of society.
All ills in society are born first in the existence of the STATE.
Without the existence of the STATE, women have no options but to hitch up with a guy and hang on for dear life.
The support, wealth, and stability that women use to find only with men, is now being provided by THE STATE.
It's more about feminism family law, no fault (men's fault) divore laws, excessive child support and custody, and affirmative action and preference for women in employment and education. And let's face it, the economic policies are radical and business is allowed to now outsource all industry and pay people peanuts and not what they really earned. These big business people in cahoots with government are just as responsible for making traditional families and marriage infeasible as the feminist are. Everyone with a college degree and a decent job or profession (for now anyway) thinks they are some big elite business interest. I dislike these people almost as much as feminist.
Putting women to work was part feminism but part big business scheme to over saturated the labor market and drive down wages and average male power. So-called "conservatives" are no friend to the average male.
In the 50's up til about the 70's people had a different value system. An honest day's pay to a man for an honest days work, and different expectations about women's behavior and role. Nowadays about the only working people making a decent living are working for the government or the healthcare/insurance complex. High paying healthcare jobs funded by high health insurance cost is really a boon for female independence. Most of what they do is of limited value, sometimes harmful and not worth the wealth they consume.
