Is it just me, or is a "know-it-all" is extremely annoying/boring?

A friend of mine spends most of his free time watching Discovery Channel (except when we go out). Every time he is in his house he will be watching Discovery. So obviously he got to know a lot of things. However lately he made a point of always explaining everything. If we watch a movie he will find the need to explain small aspects how they do not make sense, how it's physically impossible, whenever we talk if you use a word with a wrong connotation he will correct you explaining why it's wrong to use said word in said sentence, he always tries to philosophize everything, etc (just to give some examples).

I find that so annoying and so boring it's incredible! I mean it's fun to know a lot of stuff, and I do know a lot of stuff myself, but damn I don't always act like a know-it-all and I don't always try to teach everything I know to people or always correct them. Is it just me, or do you guys find that extremely annoying/boring?

People that think they know it all are pretty annoying... I am told i know quite a large amount.. mainly for my interest and curiosity will i find out stuff.. for example, how stuff works. but i never force or give out knowledge or chip in until asked. I have friends that know i know lots and they come up to me and ask. i explain. they are happy. i never subject them to a compulsory listening session

This is a good point. Until someone points it out to you, you're still thinking you're sharing knowledge or helping them understand.

i have that problem. I tend to "teach" those that don't really want to be taught. It's like teaching a pig to sing.

I have to learn to keep my mouth shut.

Knowing things is always great, it just depends on how they convey the information... if your friend talks about things he knows in a condescending/patronizing manner then it gets annoying, but if he shares the information in a funny/interesting way then it's fine.

One of my friends knows everything there is to possibly know about HD TV technology... he loves showing off his knowledge when given the chance but since he doesn't patronize us I'm chill with it.

If in doubt, ask the person to shut you up if you are getting on their nerves. Sometimes girls want to listen and if you have a lot to say this can be interesting to them. Reciting facts from TV is not really what I am talking about, I have a lot of life experience to share. I can go on and on and on and girls will often keep asking me questions and before I can answer they ask yet another one based on part of my answer. I often shutup and say....okay I have been doing all the talking now it is your turn and often they are like oh no, please keep this story going. It is good to ask questions but at the same time espeically if you are out and about I would rather just shut up and go dance and relax. I don't think anyone likes a "know it all" and no one knows it all!

1) Trying to compensate for their lack of knowledge on a certain field.

2) Trying too hard to impress people.

Me and my friends also call these types of ppls "One-Uppers" because they almosy always try to outstage people.

you pretty much described my friend right here, although I'd add to number two that they try to impress people because they have no self confidence at all whatsoever
