Notice that most of the sets I open immediately fizzle/go nowhere. Probably like 3/4. Is that because I'm opening poorly or just a reasonable success rate (success meaning group is happy to talk to you)? The openers I use vary, Usually "Hey how's it going" or "How's your hot girl summer going?" Appearance-wise I look as good as I reasonably can. Any tips on how to successfully open more consistently?

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.
You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

In my opinion direct and indirect openers should be used according to the situation, but you can also put a neg after an opener. I think you're missing a bit of a direct opener in your examples.
