Why "Whatever You Want" Keeps You Single

She says the movie looks dumb; you suddenly agree. She tests you with a little attitude; you apologize for nothing.

You think you're being easy to get along with. She reads something else entirely: a man with no edges. Nothing to hold on to. No friction, no tension, no reason to wonder what he really thinks.

The "22 Rules" taught me to push back — playfully, calmly, without needing her approval. Strange things happened after that.

Humourous Little Story With A Lesson:

Dunno if you guys know about this little thing in Sydney we have called the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, well it was on last weekend.

I actually live in the alternative kinda area near the c.b.d. where a lot of gay guys and girls live.

So this time of year the place is always packed with gay dudes (and hot hot lesbian chicks too!) who fly in for the biggest event in the homosexual calender. Unlike the cool Sydney gays a lot of these imports are pretty rabid in trying to get as much action as possible.

Anyway, on Saturday morning after hitting the gym I decide to go clothes shopping.

Its a hot sunny Sydney day and as that hole in the ozone layer is right above Oz I slap on my groovey cowboy hat (that my friends tell me makes me look massively gay) to protect myself from skin cancer and hit the local streets to find some cool threads.

Of course being a busy little bee, and not being into that scene I totally forget that its Mardis Gras weekend.

So I'm walking along King Street Newtown (after Oxford Street the Gayest street in the world; HEY the gay guys know how to dress! Ever seen Queer Eye?) and all these guys are smiling at me and saying "hi," and I'm thinking to myself, "wow I must just have these really positive vibes going on right now." Even the lesbians are holding eye contact and smiling at me!

Every item of clothing I buy the shop assistants are like "have a good NIGHT." I'm like "WTF? Night? Its still 11am!

Its not til I'm sitting in a cafe in Erskinville (a suburb with a very large gay community), on my way down to the direct factory outlets in Alexandria, having a fruit frappe and this guy with a really camp US accent strikes up conversation with me and asks me if I'm from Sydney and once he hears that I am he wants to know where the best after parties are.

The penny drops and I start pissing myself laughing. "Sorry dude, I hear Sleaze Ball goes off but that aint my scene." He laughs too and we go our seperate ways.

Later I'm buying some clothes and the HOT HOT attendant is like "So what are the clothes for?"

Having guys hit on me coz they thought I was gay was okay, but having a girl I wanted to hit on thinking I swung that way was another thing! Besides I had given this chick some serious eye contact and now she was giving me the "oh you are buying some new clothes to look your best at the parade tonight" **** too!

"I'm not gay!" I snapped at her with a smile to take out the sting. "Its just a ****ing hat!"

"I never thought you were gay! Gay guys don't look at me like... I like the hat!" I ended up chatting telling them of how hot I must be to have all these guys after to me and how much easier it would be if girls were that forward, they give me some hot cross buns (they are out already!) and then went home on that high note...

Anyway, two important lessons came out of this.

1/. I do look gay in a cowboy hat, my friends weren't joking... but chicks still dig it!

2/. It REALLY is cool to approach.

It was enlightening to be on the other end of it.

I had a heap of guys try to get my interest. Not once did I feel annoyed, disturbed, threatened (okay the big black guy in leather was kinda scary!). They didn't use lines or any of the bull**** tactics often refered to here.

They just say hi. As a human being I felt compelled to reply with a smile and a greeting of my own. There was not an automatic thought, "he's just saying that coz he wants to **** me."

Only a homophobe would freak from a polite "hi" and a smile. Just as only a manhater would freak if it was a woman being greeted. The problem there isn't the person saying hi, its the person freaking. And you wouldn't want her anyway.

Now, I am totally not into guys in that way (really!) but it was cool, it must obviously be even cooler for a guy to say "hi" to a girl who likes guys.

Even after the penny dropped I was cool, I just say hi and go on my way, they knew if I was interested I would have stopped and chatted.

If you are just polite and normal (read: sober, non-sleazy, friendly, non pushy, relaxed) there is NO WAY there is ANYTHING wrong with saying "hi" to a girl.

These dudes saying hi to me and the one who struck up convo, being guys knew that as a guy, I like sex, sure I woundn't like sex with THEM, but thats not the point.

The point is that chicks like sex too and there is nothing wrong or unnatural or shameful about putting the interest out there.

In fact, it was kind of flattering... That sounded really gay didn't it?

Hope this helps some of those who have internalised that the idea that somehow it is wrong to talk to girls.

So take a leaf out of the gay boys books and just "hi." Doesn't hurt anyone.

"She Liked You in March. It's October Now."

Attraction runs on a clock.

She flirted for weeks. Touched your arm. Found reasons to be alone with you. And you were careful. Respectful. Waiting for the right moment.

The moment had a shelf life. It expired around month two, and by the time you asked her out, she'd quietly filed you under "little brother."

One of the hardest lessons inside the 22 Rules: women rarely wait. Interest either grows or it decays, and nothing decays it faster than a man who never moves.

Make the move while she's still inventing reasons to be near you.

after "the penny dropped" I hope you didn't bend over to pick it up

cool story though

And seriously, when typical guys make fun of what you're wearing, you're most likely wearing the right sh1t. Guys have their heads up their as$ when it comes to style. I have been made fun of before for wearing a bright coloured shirt, but I have gotten compliments from girls. So whatever.....

I knew you were soft and fluffy!! There is no such thing as "Gay" or "Homo-phobe" - only homos use this language to make their deviancy and perversions seem fair-seeming!!!

Heh, I lived a stone throw away from King Street Newtown at the Sydney University Village. And yeah, King Street is overrun by homos and lesbians.

I burned myself pretty bad the first year when it came to Mardi Gras. I thought it was New Orleans style, with hot chicks flashing left and right and orgies going all over the place. Oh boy was I wrong.
