Yep, this was actually one of the biggest reasons we split. The asymptomatic shedding part is a real annoyance because it means your partner can be infectious any time without you knowing. That being said, herpes can be transmitted from and to any part of the body even without any visible sores. They are called asymptomatic and they only shed about half the amount that people with herpes symptoms shed. But can be just as contagious.
Chances are every single one of you has been with someone who has HSV 1 or 2
IMO this is why condoms are especially important for men to use. Women are far more vulnerable to getting genital herpes from unprotected men and it really messes people's sex life up, so do everyone a favour and wrap up if it's a casual fling. Many men are not symptomatic and you might not even realise the damage you're doing.
"Herpes whitlow" is also a condition in which herpes manifests on your finger or hand, caused by the virus getting into a cut or break in the skin of your hands. IMO it's almost worse than either of the other two conditions, because just touching someone you're being intimate with could give them herpes.
(Note that I'm no MD, I'm a Chemist, but I did a ridiculous amount of research on this when I was trying to salvage my last relationship...)
