Slacks and a coat are fine as long as the place you're going to is a decent place...I'd lose the tie, though. I'd also try and find like a 2 button blazer; 3 and 4 button coats look much more formal than for a bar/club--save those for the job interview. You can probably pull it off with jeans as well and look fine.

I was in a suit at a club once, and only because my friends picked me up straight from work and I couldn't change. All my buddies actually encouraged me cause they said I looked good, but the girls I talked to there just said I was overdressed. To be fair, though, it was a black pinstripe; I was overdressed.
