Hunting....

Is there something about hunting that makes it alpha in some way? I ask this for a variety of reasons. I grew up hunting, but I'm pretty much over it. I go once in a while to get some meat, but many times I have friends that can just donate some once in a while. I don't really have fun doing it, it's never been my preferred hobby. But yet, men do it everywhere. Seems it is the hobby of choice for rich guys. Guys love to dress up in camo and go out and kill them some animals. Don't get me wrong, I'm not pro-animal. And hunting is an important part of conservation, when it's done correctly. But I friggin' HATE those douches who go out and just want to shoot stuff, there is nothing alpha about that.

Anyways, it seems hunting and bagging trophy animals has been the hobby of choice among the wealthy since the beginning of time, no matter how easy or hard it is to do. It's just not for me anymore, and I am debating whether I should teach my son how to do it. Hard to know. I honestly would rather plant a garden. I don't really like to fish either, just a sh*t pile of work and money to do all this stuff.

Some people may genuinely like hunting. There are people who like anything you can think of. Most probably do it because a) they were brought up to, b) they think it will make them cool and respected. Killing a helpless creature for no reason with technology someone else made that puts you at no risk and bragging about it or passing it off as a "hobby" at all sounds pretty pathetic to me, but I guess some people legitimately think it's a sport or whatever. I can't imagine anyone who actually likes hunting would do it with something that makes it as easy as modern weaponry, it just comes off as pathetic to me, like some middle aged dude who goes to play a game for kids and uses cheat codes to win and then brags/posts about it, which is why I think it's done to get validation that they're manly or whatever.

Hunting used to be a necessity. Nowadays, it is mostly a hobby. Depending on how and what you hunt, the process can involve a great amount of skill or very little skill.

As for hunting being a rich man's sport, you are probably thinking of European as opposed to North American-style hunting. In Europe, hunting was for centuries a preserve of the aristocracy. Peasants were not allowed to hunt on their lord's land by law and faced severe penalties when they did. And when lords went hunting, they didn't go out alone but rather as part of a big hunting party, with dogs, servants, etc. It was mostly a social thing. To this day, hunting is considered a gentleman's sport in most parts of Europe.

Deer hunting is big money for my state, in terms of fees, fines, and permits, and also for taxes on all the money that hunters spend. The state "manages" the deer population into massive overpopulation, so that every fat dumb redneck can kill one easily. At the same time, the deer destroy crops and cause countless vehicular accidents, even deaths.

Killing a deer out of season is punished with a 1-year prison sentence in Illinois, even for people with no prior record. Killing a person gets you about three years.

For those that eat deer meat, I think it's fine. But to just kill an animal for fun, I don't really agree with that.
