I find myself getting winded after about 3 rounds of fighting. Most my peers seems to be able to go 4 or 5 rounds before they have to sit down and take a breather. I can rarely get past 3 though and I'm out of breath. Anything I can do to improve that situation?

For most beginner fighters, they run out of steam because there not relaxed and loose enough.

I was the most cardio conditioned guy in my gym. I could run, skip and attack the pads longer then anyone else. But put me in the ring against one of the old, fat beer drinkers and I turned into the worst.

What I did was bring in my own CD to play when I spar. I would just sing along in my head and fight to the music. It worked wonders.

The only way to become comfortable in the ring is to spar often.

If you can train for longer on the pads then you can in the ring. Then you are just not used to it.

The best way to get better at sparing is to spar.
