Pushing your boundaries isn't "stupid nonsense". Whatever her reaction is will be useful learning for him, and he suggested something similar himself while also saying she "seemed interested". Even if she says no, she may still be interested and give him another chance, which one should be able to tell by her reaction. You are afraid of being provocative, I'm not.
