how does the forum decide when to make a thread more than one page

ive wondered this for a while. does it go off of post count or content. like could youhave five really long posts and it would make the thread go to two pages. or do you have to have like fifty?

Clearly, as its a setting in your control panel -- that the number of posts determines the length of a page.
