Social Proof isn't something anyone can earn. Social Proof reflects your character. It isn't impossible for a friendly guy to be really popular; one of my friends is the friendliest guys you'll ever meet, yet he gets more girls than almost any of my friends save for one. Friendly guys are often given this image that they aren't really that popular because they're vulnerable and won't defend themselves. My friend is none of these things; he's friendly, but fvck around with him and he'll fight back.

play sports, form a band, be a total badass, or game as many chicks as you can. this gets you respect in highschool.

Definitely try to get on a sports team and work hard at it. Show your dedication to something and it'll reflect.
Just focus on being a cool guy and having VALUE and it will come. Blah blah band blah sports whatver. What it really comes down to is your social value. Are you funny, are you chilled, are you outoing, are you fun, are you worth being around? Do you give people value or take it from them?

Putting your effort into sports is GREAT if you enjoy it. But using it to improve your social value is putting your roots ******d rather than inward. What happens when your somewhere where you don't know many people, you have no rep, you can't show off your spoting skills or musical genius. If you are a COOL GUY in general you are still going to get through and people will still be drawn to you.

popularity is simple. be goofy, spontaneous, and socialize.
talk to everyone. dont just focus on the popular crowd, because high school is full of cliques and different types of popularity. To be popular in everyone's eyes, you have to get along with different groups.
I go to a school with roughly 3200 people and am quite well known, I get ego-boosters about my social status all the time.
Join different organizations and things like that. Played football for a year, so am cool with all the football players. Im a smart guy so I know pretty much know all of that crowd. and i also get voted class president every year.
there isn't really a formula, but your ability to socialize is pretty much the most important part.
