How do I convince some to give a $1000?

I live in Toronto and go to Ryerson University. I'm getting a job on campus, it pays $8.65/hour and based on performance it can increase to $12/hour. This job involves calling Ryeson Alumini and convincing them to donate to the University.

The problem is I need to ask them for $1000. If they are not willing to give a $1000 then I need to negociate. This job is good for my conversation skills because first I need build a rapport with the aulumini and then convince them that they should donate to the University.

Does anyone have anyone negotiation experience and tips that I can use?

Well whats the reason that you need the 1000 dollars? If you don't know then find out then tell the alumini why you are requesting this money.

Tell the alumini what the school will do with the money and how it will help. That's all I can really think of, oh and make sure you sound confident. Instead of looking at it as a problem look at it as an oppurtunity to raise money. Anyone will give money you just have to instill in them the assurance of why they should give the money to you. So think about WHY they should. For example so them the drawbacks of not donating the money and show them the good that will happen if they do.

The most important part of persuasion is illiciting somebody's values.

Try and ask questions that will bring back great memories for them, while they were at University. Once you know what they hold dearest about their old college days, you can implement this into your request for 1000$ donation.

The moment a sales person tries to ellicit my values on the phone I hang up. Maybe it's just me cuz I hate phone communcation. It makes me feel like they have an agenda and are just wasting my time.

It's probably because they are doing it in a rehearsed/robotic type fashion.

This guy has instant rapport based on the fact that they attended the same University. If he had the tone of an old college buddy when he delivered the donation request, i'll bet he'd be pretty successful.

Then again, 1000$ is alot of money.

If you want them to donate, explain why the university needs the money, what the money will be spent on, and why they should donate the money.

I have not got the job yet, yesterday I did a phone interview in order to get the job. They said I did okay in the interview but I seemed a little nervous to them. I'm still recovering from my AFC habits, I guess you could say I'm a RAFC. Two years ago I would dare not use the phone, even to call a friend because I would get nervous and I probably didn't have the guts to try out for a job where have phone people and ask $1000. This tuesday I will know If I get the job.

The money that alumini donate goes towards my big fat pay check , nah I'm joking. Well the money goes towards

- Shcolorships
- Library
- Computers
- New buildings the Uni buildings
