Hot or Not: The maths!

Considering the popularity of Hot or Not site, I decided to take a plunge in their computations.

If you vote for women on the site, you will invariably (at random) run into women with over 7 ratings most of the time. In my opinion, the probability of this happening is better than 0.85 (or 85%). Now the site claims that if you score 7 or higher then you hit the upper 30% echelon.

So the question is: Shouldn't you be coming across more often women with less than 7 rating since they would populate more of the site? But I never came across such a mathematical reality!

Also, the site declares that it normalizes the "clicking" pattern of a user and skews the score. I wonder how it does that since one can vote without logging in i.e., maintain complete anonymity.

Conclusion: Don't take the ratings of the aforementioned site seriously or otherwise.

Without logging in, the site will keep track of your IP address while you're there voting. And I'm a 9.1, yet I get twice as many 5s as I get 8s and 9s. They're calculations are screwy, yet it's a lot better than most sites where NOBODY can break the 8s or 9s due to people clicking low scores without thinking just to keep the pictures moving.

What if your IP address changes everytime you connect (like many of us who dial-up off and on)?

i might be wrong but this is used by people who feel very insecure about themselves!!, no offence to all DJ's that are on the site intended!!

They do grade on a curve but also notice how many 1 votes and 2 votes you get if you put your pic up there. It may not be the best but it sure can give you an idea of what makes you look better.

I posted a few pics up there, the one with me dancing with a chick got the best score. I think that got a 9.6 or 9.7 depending on when I checked it. Pic taken on the same day but in a different position and facial expression anywhere from 8.6 to 9.4.

in the social sciences there's a term for it: SELF-SELECTION

It's pretty obvious that people who think they look good TEND to be more willing to share their photos with the entire world and to let themselves be judged. It's only a confirmation of what they (think they) know. At least this is the conclusion I'd draw.

Sure I have some insecurities, but I mainly put it on there to see if my self-evaluation of my appearance was realistic to what others think (although it shouldnt matter I know)

I rate myself between a 7-8

but I dont look at the scores to confirm my sense of self worth. Although It did get me a bit pissed when I saw a few 1's, 2's, 3's

ohh and dave..Ive seen some pretty homely lookin people on Hot or not..so its not always Good looking people looking for a fix, or high about their looks.

Of course, Starman, there are some "homely" people there (though they may not think of themselves that way!)

I'm toying with the idea of putting my pics up. I want to see how I look to other people...Do you get to meet people through Hot or Not? I notice that they have some kind of "contact me" mechanism built in...

Dave yea there is a Meet Me Option..but I think you have to pay $3 a month for it..

One of the reasons their computing mechanism sucks. The problem is: I am certain many people take it seriously enough to jolt their self-esteem.

Frankly, I do not feel the need for a "feedback" like that. As we always reiterate here, confidence comes from within. If you feel like you're 9 then, by George, you will radiate it all around. These idiotic sites (like Hot or Not) do not mean a thing.
