I was the host for the Tucson meet up, and as such, was determined to go even though they were officially cancelled.
I park my car in a nearby garage and begin heading to the location. It is a few minutes until the 8pm meet time. As i walk towards the meet up spot i remain alert and scan for suspicious activity or bad signs. I make sure to use my peripheral vision and not stand out as i walk toward the meet up spot.
I decide that i will first scout the area. The first thing i notice is a police SUV parked in front of the meet up location. This unnerves me but i keep walking and don't see anything else which catches my attention. I also don't see anyone waiting there.
I make a circle around the location, and as i again approach the meet up spot the SUV was gone and no one was there. It appears the cop left after determining nothing was going to happen. I sit down at the exact meet up spot and dabble with my phone to appear normal as possible. A few minutes later a young man (18-24) approaches me and asked me if this is where "the protest" was.
The passphrase was to ask for a pet shop. His mannerism and incorrect passphrase indicates he wasn't one of us, so i coolly played it off. He then states he was looking for the pro-rape rally. This definitely gave it away. He was there to cause trouble. I again play it off and he walks away, perhaps with some embarassment.
I began to wonder if anyone would show up. A couple minutes later a young man approaches me with an eager look in his eyes. As soon as he started talking i knew he was one of us. His voice gives away his nervousness, and it takes him 20 seconds of talking to finally mention the pet shop.
I calmly respond: "Yes, it's here". He suggests we cross the street and sit down on a bench and i oblige. I introduce myself with an alias, and we chat for 1 minute, then the same guy who approached me earlier shows up and asks us the same question. Before i have a chance to say something, my companion blurts out an answer. Again, his voice showed anxiety and lack of composure. He is too quick to deny involvement and I think it gave it away.
At that point I don't really give a fvck but I decide to play it off again. I also began to conversate with my meet up buddy to make it appear we know each other, and to disengage that punk from our conversation.
The punk then says he was really hoping to find some rapists to beat up. As he says this he makes a fist and punches the palm of his hand, while stomping the ground in anger. He is ready to start some trouble and wants to intimidate us. There is 2 of us and 1 of him. He isn't going to succeed.
He walks away and my meet up buddy immediately suggests we go somewhere else. It was 8:10. As the host, i was instructed to be there until 8:20 but i felt it was time to go.
We take a circuitous route to a near by bar. Shortly after walking away i see a group of 20 people sitting in the grass. It seems they are waiting for something, quite possibly they are there to protest. But maybe they called it off when they didn't see enough men at the meet up site.
Anyway, once inside the bar we have a great chat. He's been following PUA and neomasculinity for about a year now and doesn't have anyone to share his beliefs with (without paying the price). He seems intelligent.
We will meet up again next week.
