HELP - Scared of life,scared of getting a job.

So I know I need to get a job. I have an English Degree but I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I WANT TO DO WITH MY LIFE. I search for jobs online, but I get a sick feeling in my stomach because I don't know what i'm looking for. Im scared of making a wrong decision, Im scared of getting another unbearable job, IM SCARED OF LIFE. Just searching for jobs makes me want to cry. I think i'm developing a phobia of it or something. I need a job, but the stress of all this is getting to me. Help, please

What EXACTLY are you scared of? List the worst things that could happen. (Money, interest, hours, ect).

scared of waking up in 20yrs realising that you work some sh1tty job that you hate and regret everything in life.

Im sure you know something that you want to do deep down but a whole lifetime of people telling you to not dream big and be happy with what you get has caused you to fear pursuing dreams.

Get some goals man then use the crapp jobs as stepping stones to reach your goals.

I have thought about it a lot. I really would like to do it, I just have never had the money, or something, perhaps too scared? But now i've been out of university for almost 2 years, havn't persued any sort of career and am wondering if it will be too late if I go off and teach?

I've been in a similar boat to you and I suppose I'm even still in it, in that I haven't started really getting out there -- I have my exams to do first. But I don't give a shi't. Repeat this mantra: "death, death, death, death....". So when someone tells you what to do, hold your middle finger up high and cry "DEATH!".

It WILL work out. Whatever you do, you WILL survive so long as you want to. Ever heard of unemployment benefits? Hell, you can make a living looking for lost diamonds in car parks or scrounging from supermarkets' throwouts. People do. So nothing matters. Calm down and find that thing which will make you come alive, and stick with it, wherever it leads you.

You only think too much, when it keeps you from taking action.

I think teaching english abroad will open your eyes to many new things, and help you develop your life direction. I wouldn't worry about what to do after, just focus on one goal at a time.

Life is a stream really, constantly moving without us knowing what's around the next bend.

The times in my life I've contemplated my direction, I just picked one goal, and achieved it. That goal lead to another, and so on.

By the way, I have a buddy that teaches English abroad. He's taught in 8 different countries so far. He loves it, has been doing this for about 10 years or so. That's his "calling" you could say.

Look up the JET program. You can teach english in japan and everything is paid for + you get paid...so...you dont have to cry yourself to sleep.

Dude nothing is wrong with having a ****ty job. What matters is what you do with the money you make. I have a boring job, but I love the money. Money means you can go do whatever you feel like doing without worrying if you can afford it. It's a great feeling.

I mean if you don't wanna work your life will become boring because you won't have any money and you don't have boring times to compare to good times. Then the good times become boring and thus, you become boring.

Sounds like you're afraid of making the wrong choice. Don't waste time being afraid of that happening, know that you can always change your mind. You're going to be thrown a multitude of choices which will impact every facet of your life. The thing that you can't lose sight of is that you have the ability to choose how you react to those times. This is when the real fun begins.

But teaching overseas sounds like a great idea. You cannot possibly now what you want in your future, if you have NOT experience anything in your present.

dude, I didn't start teaching abroad until I was 38. And if you go to asia you don't need much money.

BUT, contrary to what one said above, it WILL give you experience and expand your mind and all that but it WON'T help out your resume all that much unfortunately, but wtf, do it anyways.

Jokes aside, what did you want to do when you were a little kid? Astronaut? Cowboy? Pro football player? Please, give us something to work with here.

I think the problem lies in how you're framing the situation. Nobody in life knows for a fact where they're going. All you have is this moment. Life's too short to regret your past decisions and worry about what may happen in the future. Hell, for all we know a giant meteor may hit the earth in a couple years and we'll all go the way of the dinosaur.

But probably not. More likely than not you're going to be an old man someday. What kind of adventures are you going to have before your body starts to deteriorate?

It was a life-changing experience for me watching my granddad on his deathbed a couple of years ago. He had just turned 100. A man who had seen the automobile, the airplane, and all kinds of other technology come into play. A man who had lived through the great depression. What did he do most of his adult life? He played. He had fun. Money wasn't important to him, as long as he had enough to eat. His main joy in life was calf roping, and he didn't even start that until he was about 40. He still won trophies, saddles, and he had a blast. And he was still roping on his 90th birthday. I swear he was a 12 year old boy trapped in an old man's body.

And that's really all it takes to lead a happy and fulfilling life. Doing what you love. It keeps you young where it really matters--in your head. Sounds to me like you need to reignite your love affair with life. Spice things up a bit.

Maybe you need to take a soul-searching road trip. Or buy a one-way ticket to someplace you've always wanted to check out and work a crap job there for a few months. You need to see, to breathe, to experience, to LIVE!!! The world is your oyster, my friend!

If he wants to work for an Embassy or the U.S. State Department...the fact that he has worked as a teacher overseas would be a plus in his resume.
