I confess I've been watching Buckwild on MTV (it's kind of a redneck version of Jersey Shore). Hey, it's a guilty pleasure. Anyway, I heard one of the girls, Katie, writes a blog where she discusses dating, among other things, so I checked it out.
This part I'm quoting talks about her different guy friends, I thought it was an interesting insight into how girls see them. I also thought it was interesting how she used "love" as a baseline to describe each of them:
"Every girl has her guy friends! Here are some of mine.
the one I’m in love with.It really sucks. There’s this guy I’ve been friends with for a few years now. We graduated in the same year but he went to another high school. He’s so fun and hilarious and classically handsome. My favorite thing about him is that we get along so well. I always wonder if he’s just extremely amiable with everyone or if we have a special connection. I would never ask though because he’s too perfect of a guy to ever lose. And on top of that I would hate myself if i hurt him. He doesn’t go to school with me so it’s a daily struggle not to call him everyday. But I’m going to keep it this way because I don’t want a crush to ruin what could potentially be a co-ed best friendship.
the one in love with me.There’s always at least one. I hate it. One of the wittiest and most lovable guys I know loves me and it sucks because I don’t feel the same way. It’s been this way since high school. It makes the friendship a lot harder.
the one I wish I was in love with. There’s this guy I’m really good friends with. He treats me so well: he’s available to talk whenever I need him but he’s also the first one to ground me when I act out of line. He’s SCARY good looking. Everyone who encounters him loves him. He’s going to be in Med school. Everything about him is so perfect and I know he would be the perfect boyfriend but I just don’t have any attraction to him. I honestly see him the same way as I see my girlfriends. It’s a shame.
the one I used to be in love with.I have been very lucky as to still have all of my ex romantic interests still in my life. They are spread all the way from Manhattan to Alabama but they are all still in tact. I don’t really believe that once you break up you should just cut a person out of your life. They meant so much at one point to you. It can be hard sometimes–especially balancing lingering romantic feelings. It may not be possible to become one of your exes bros but maintaining a post dating relationship can be really great. I don’t know what I would do without my most recent ex! He knows exactly how to cheer me up or make me laugh because we were so close when we dated! Compatibility doesn’t disappear after you break up."
Notice there are romantic feelings on one side or the other for each one of these. I think it adds evidence to the "Men and women can't be friends" argument.
