From what I've heard, she'd apparently met the guy several times in real life. It wasn't: "Hi! It's nice to meet you for the FIRST TIME! What are you going to do with those trash bags and rope?" She had a chance to figure out that this guy wasn't quite right... the internet is no more at fault than any other place where people can get to know other people.

Well, I just read your thread, and for a couple of minutes, the whole story had me hooked. I just did some searches online, read her Myspace messages, which are really sad, and tried to find some more information about Ben Fawley, the guy who supposedly killed her.

I think the most surprising aspect of the case is that she had consensual sex with this guy who has been a known pervert, rapist, and child pornographer. What is even more shocking is the fact that the girl supposedly attended 15 different schools throughout Europe, and had “street smarts.” Why then would she, a 17yr-old college freshman be ****ing around with a 38yr-old psycho?

Anyway, for the past hour or so, this story has absorbed my captivated my attention. I think deviantArt is at fault for this, not Myspace. It was very disturbing to read Murder and Art: the deviantART Connection and later do a google on “ “Ben Fawley” and “devianART” “ to find this result with no page to display. (note I obviously mis-spelled the name of the site in this search)

If you don’t read the whole article I linked, read this quote I took from it:

In January, two teenaged members of deviantART strangled a classmate in the parking lot of a Taco Bell in East Moline, Illinois in the middle of the day. After the girl was dead, they dragged the body in a tarp to a wooded area and set it on fire. After six hours, the body had not burned completely so Sarah Kolb and Cory Gregory enlisted the help of a third classmate to dismember the body, put the pieces in a garbage bag and stuffed the bag in a manhole. They are slated to stand trial next month.

In 2002, a man masqueraded as a young woman in her early twenties named Madison. Using the name "Chaos" and several different pictures of various young women as "self-portraits," the man preyed upon underage members of deviantART, successfully getting more than one minor male to send him nude photos.

While it can easily be argued that deviantART is simply a cross-section of society, with the good, bad and ugly all mixed in, I think there's something else that needs to be looked at. deviantART (known as "DA" to members) allows many different kinds of art, including many things that to the average person would qualify as disturbing evidence of emotional and psychological problems. As a Policy Violation Administrator for 3 years, I saw literally everything you can think of, including underage nudity, grotesque corpse photos gleaned from the web and submitted as 'original work,' thousands of photos of sliced-open arms and other body parts and more. While DA does have certain guidelines for the submission of work, these rules can be ambiguous at times, and interpreted differently by different administrators.

I can't believe that a site known to harbor such psychopathic criminals is still allowed to remain online, and no one has pressed any charges???

Not only is that google search result disturbing, but moreso, this other article proves it to be a fact that Fawley was in fact an administrator at deviantART...not only does the place harbor criminals, but it is run by criminal psychos too? (this article also has another picture of him)

Fawley - an aspiring artist, actor, and prolific Goth Web master - posted the Behl photos on the Internet arts site, deviantArt.com, under the user name, "Skulz."

Bottom line is the girl was dumb. This is what can happen to stupid girls.

I also think they should take down her Myspace page. It's just embarassing and a disgrace. Seeing all of these losers leaving her poorly-written goodbye messages. Someone even photoshopped a really ugly angel and tried to photoshop a pic of the girl into the angel's arms.

If I were her parents, I'd tell them to take down that damn page, and give the girl some privacy.

Seriously.. myspace sucks. It's so trashy and unsecure -- stupid people post their personal info such as workplace & school and its open for everyone.

Facebook is much better. It's a closed system. You have to be a student to get in, and you can only view other people at your school's profiles & people on your friends list. And none of those gaudy HTML mods that myspace lets you do to you rprofile. Much faster site too.

Beyond all of that... anytime someone is murdered it is a horrible, horrible incident. I don't know if there is anything worse than taking someone's right to live.

I think the guy is at fault for it, not MySpace, and not deviantArt. How could it be the fault of the service and not the user? If I kill someone with a gun, is it the guns fault? Of course not - it's mine. If I get drunk and wreck my car is it my cars fault? If DrBeard uses the techniques in the DJB to land a girl (a joke, a joke) and then kills her, is it SoSuave.net's fault? To think that is absurd.

I fail to see the connection between what happened and the website being at fault for it... if that was the case then AOL would be shut down tomorrow considering all of the times old pervs have used it to facilitate their meeting underage girls.

Something tells me that not everyone on there is a psychopathic criminal. Some of the artwork and wildlife photos people there take are amazing. Sure, some people on there are deranged - however I don't see anything illegal about weird people joining a website... and so far as I know, there's no law against a criminal joining a website either. He could be on SoSuave for all we know!

However I don't want to be seen as completely closed-minded, so I'm receptive to changing my mind... if you can tell me one law that the website could be charged with breaking?

Think about it: with whom she would have sex a) known pervert, rapist, and child pornographer b) an obvious nerd with 1 inch think glasses from her class.
Talking about his expertise also.

I guess 15 different schools would not add common sense to anyone's life. Yes, they make her more street smart, but the more street smart she is, the more she tend to hang out with guys from caterogy a) and not b). So I think it is very clear that any girl who tend to hang out with guys of type a) have much higher chance to get murdered.

Some contrarian conclusions:
Street smarts people tend to die faster and in greater number.
Girl are drawn to experts in sex, it is their uncanny female mentality: "If he is good at it (or whatever he is doing) then other females found him great. I should too."
