"The Coffee Shop Girl You Never Spoke To"

You've replayed it a hundred times. She stood three feet away, scrolling her phone. You had an opening. You composed the perfect line — after she was gone.

For all you know, she's married now. To some guy who said something. Anything.

Openers are cheap. Almost any sentence works when it's delivered within three seconds. The expensive part is the standing there, drafting and deleting, while the window quietly closes.

The "22 Rules" stripped out my hesitation. What to open with, how to keep it alive, and the one habit that costs guys more women than anything else: waiting for perfect.

You know, if things keep panning out this way (not making any promises), I maybe be able to move most of my attention away from getting dates to moving on my dates. I've been able to report a good amount of field action the past few weeks (but still no kiss).

Today I went to a museum with a German girl. Cute: blonde hair, blue eyes, kinda thick glasses. I should tease (CF sounds so much more manly, doesn't it) her about them. Met her Friday night. Texted her saturday to ask her out Monday. A bit faster than my usual 3 days, but that advice has just not been working in France. Whatever, she's interested so it's all good. I enjoy joking around with this girl.

I'm not yet back in my old form - I used to be hilarious, now I'm just a big moper heh - but I'm getting there. So we walked around, looking at art. She does art so it was sometimes interesting to get her opinion on how such and such piece of art was made and so forth. Most of the time I was surprisingly alone in trying to understand the art around me. I liked the pictures of her paintings on her phone though.

During the visit, her phone rang like three times. And she stopped to talk to her friends and her mom for a while. And she was continuing that conversation too. So rude. That really bugged me, and I should have said something. Some people post advice on here saying you should drop a girl right away who does that. They're right. She didn't even apologize! But ah well, we'll see what happens. Experience is the best teacher. I don't have that much more time here, I'll just make fun of her next time.

So let's see, she had to meet her friend, we had fun. I teased her a lot. She asked me a million questions about myself. I HATE answering these stupid questions about myself. Where are you from? What do you do? What schools did you go to? People want to know these things so they can put you in their nice little boxes and believe you categorized. I should really stop answering them directly. What a waste of time, and I get so mad at myself every time I'm stupid enough to answer.

She doesn't have anything interesting to ask?

She's leaving town soon then coming back a few days before I leave town again. That will be our last chance. Time for another rather rushed attempt to kick it with some chick before she leaves town.

More tomorrow.

"You'll Never Feel READY to Walk Over"

Next Monday you'll feel more confident. After the gym you'll feel more confident. After one more drink you'll feel more confident. After you get a better haircut, a better jacket, a better job.

You've been "getting ready" for two years.

She's standing ten feet away right now. She'll be gone in four minutes. No amount of preparation will manufacture the courage that only comes from moving your feet.

Walk over. Stumble through the first sentence. Let it be clumsy. Let it be imperfect. You will feel more alive in those ten seconds than you have all month.

What are your thoughts on the phone thing? I definitely should have said something though...

The phone thing has never happened to me. If it does, I'll stand next to her, whip out my own phone and keep calling her over and over. "Yo, I got things to say, too."
