"So, What Do You Do for Fun?"

She asks it casually, mid-sip. And you feel the floor open up, because the honest answer is work, gym, and a couple shows you're half-watching.

Women rarely say this out loud, but a man with a life is attractive before he says a word. The guy who spent Saturday deep-sea fishing and came back with photos and a story — he walks in already interesting.

The "22 Rules" pushed me to build a life worth talking about. Turns out the fastest way to be interesting to women is to be interested in your own life first.

This probably ain't a big deal to most, but today I had my first true cold approach and thought I'd share...

First of all let me say that I've been reading this board for a couple years, and it's been a big help in making me more confident in general, but I never really applied it to getting girls.

There's this really cute girl I've seen on my campus every M and W, so today I grew a pair and decided to talk to her for the first time. I go into the cafeteria area and notice her sitting on some stairs on the other side of the room. She didn't notice me but I walked up to her and sat down next to her...

Me: Mind if I join you?
Her: OK.
(she seemed really annoyed that I was talking to her)
Me: My name's TJ...I've seen you around school so I thought I'd say hi...
Her: Hi...my name's Kat. You're a smoker, huh?
Me: Yeah...can you smell it?
Her: Yeah. My grandmother just died of lung cancer and smoked all through her chemotherapy. You should really quit...
Me: That's too bad...

(in my mind I'm thinking "wow, this is off to a GREAT start...")

After that we had some small talk about our classes we had that day. She asked me my major and it turned out we were both psych. majors, so we talked about that for a while. The whole time the conversation didn't flow very well...I was kind of nervous and I'm sure she picked up on that. Eventually the conversation died and I said I had to leave, and that I just wanted to see what kind of person she was (she was kind of *****y, so maybe that was a subtle jab at her) and left. The original plan was to ask for her number, but it just didn't feel right asking her after that awkward convo.

I'm kind of glad that I got the balls to talk to someone I didn't know, but honestly I thought I'd feel better than I do now. I mean, I feel kinda dissed by the whole thing. I'm sure that with more experience I'll get less nervous and less hurt when it doesn't go well, but I don't know if this was any help in getting me over my fears...

Well, I'd love to hear any comments or advice...

"You'll Never Feel READY to Walk Over"

Next Monday you'll feel more confident. After the gym you'll feel more confident. After one more drink you'll feel more confident. After you get a better haircut, a better jacket, a better job.

You've been "getting ready" for two years.

She's standing ten feet away right now. She'll be gone in four minutes. No amount of preparation will manufacture the courage that only comes from moving your feet.

Walk over. Stumble through the first sentence. Let it be clumsy. Let it be imperfect. You will feel more alive in those ten seconds than you have all month.

After the first one, everything else is easier

THE HARDEST PART OF WRITING AN ESSAY IS TO START.

It's the same with anything difficult thats worth doing.

Next time blow the smoke in her face and tell her you're going to dig up her grandmother and feed her rotting corpse to your pitbull. It's called an icebreaker.

"Stop Asking Your Friends What to Text Her"

Your buddy Dave has been single for three years and thinks "hey u up" is a valid strategy. Your other buddy Mike just got dumped and told you to "just be yourself."

You showed them her text. You asked them to decode the emoji. You drafted four responses and sent the screenshot to the group chat for a vote.

She's been waiting forty minutes.

Put the phone down. Stop crowdsourcing your love life. Type something that sounds like you. Hit send. Then go do literally anything else with your evening.

Honestly, I probably would have walked away after she mentioned her dead grandmother. But, I guess you saved some face.
