I walked into a department store at one end of the mall. This was the floor where cosmetics and women shoes are sold, but I wanted to check some clothes for myself. So I approached a female working in the cologne/lipstick area:
Me:Excuse me, where is the men's department
Her (1 min. duration, this is just the meat of it): Oh, you can't get to it through here, you need to go back to the mall and go down the elevator by this restaurant blah blah blah
I make eye contact as she explains. She returned it a few times, but only in short intervals. After she turned away from one of the intervals she accidentally knocked over some lipstick that was on a stand. She bent over and picked them up nervously as she continued to give directions.
Me: give her the look that "the directions sound so complicated"
Her: I don't want you to get lost. (Said it as though it was her excuse/ justification for her wanting to walk with me)
She walks me toward the mall and explains again in simpler fashion. 40 feet later, we were right at the interface of the mall and her store and we stop.
Me: "Approximately how far is that restaurant from here"
She walks into the mall with me continuing to give directions and we go about 125 feet into the mall. During that time I introduced myself. After that she was walking with a side tilt toward me, almost as if she was leaning against me, but she was just brushing me in doing so and I felt her hair touching me too. (She might have been playing it like she was trying to look for something far ahead of us and needed to tilt to do so. )Also, during the walk:
Her: Oh, does my hair look okay like this? I'm usually blonde but I just changed my hair to this color (black).
She looks toward me and twists her with one hand
Me: Yes, it looks good
Her: Are you sure?
Me: Yes, it looks cool (harsh tone of voice)
She immediately turns her head facing straight ahead and shuts up. I felt like I had vibed to her "shut up and don't ask such questions."
Analysis: Above, when I said " it looks good," I also smiled and this came naturally. Immediately however, I thought jumped into my head that I might have made an AFC comment and body language with that, so the second time I said "it looks cool" with a harsh tone of voice and no smile. In fact, I instantaneously got rid of the smile as this thought came into my head.
The restaurant (which is right in front of the elevator to the men's department is now 40 feet away and we stop.
Her: Ok, do you see those lights?
Me: Yes
Her: The elevator is behind those lights and just blah blah blah
Me: OK, Thank you.
She smiled and said something like bye...I don't remember.
I go back where she works 45 minutes later. She was bending over looking into a mirror applying eyelash.
Me: Hey, what's up? (with a smile)
Her: Getting ready for a wedding. (no smile or reaction really just continuously fixing herself up)
Me: Wow, this late? (it was like 630PM)
Her: Yes, I'm leaving in 5 minutes. Did you get what you want.
Me:I got some pants. Are there any other men's stores worth shopping at?
Her:What do you mean?
pause
Her: What kind of clothes are you looking for?
Me: Casual. The kind of clothes I can wear to the mall or school.
Her: The men's department is the place I know of.
Me: What about that store at the other end of the mall?
Her: which one?
Me: It's called [I say the first half of the name as though I don't know the whole name]
Her: Oh, [She says the full name]. Yes, they have men's clothes there.
During this whole second convo she really didn't look at me. She continued to apply eyelash and stuff and looked like she was in a rush to get ready. She also looked like she was purposely hiding her face. I remember getting one quick look at her face and noticed that she looked really different (worse). She might have been trying to hide her face. There was a pause, I walked away from her gradually, and while still bent over she said "sorry, I have to leave really soon for the wedding," I walked away and that was it.
