Fashion Industry

Anybody here in the Fashion Buisness? I'm really into Fashion. Finding dead end paths into actually starting my own label. Alot of advisers I've seen tell me to start off working for someone/ or a Label and work my way off from there.

But I want establish a distinctive style and create my own Fashion concept, rather than work alongside someone elses ideas. I consider what Nigo (urban clothing Designer) has done is somewhere where I want to take my creativity. He started off selling T-shirts in a small store and giving them to his friends for free - then started getting extremely popular, then blew from there.

I'm heavily into Manga, Japan, Comics & Cartoons, Sneaker Culture, Pop Art, Household Goods, Star Wars memorabillia, Early Computer consoles and other unique concepts, thousands of profile work but have no fvcking clue about nailing it down into something constructive.


I'm really at a dead end here into what path to actually take, I'm still finishing my BTEC Multimedia Diploma this year, but in my heart of hearts, becoming a Fashion Designer (making my own apparell) is what I want to do. Just haven't taken the opportunity to pursue it, any advise on this?

I'm guessing you want to own and run a Fashion business, rather than be just another cog in the corporation.

Therefore read Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. That should steer you in the right direction. Then begin reading books on how and where to find assets and accumulate wealth (not necessarily money). Then look to using your assets to start off your fashion business. Find successful people who have done this and work for them, get them to mentor you so you can learn. learning is the most important thing.

I will take that, going to order it on Amazon this evening. Moreso, what could I do besides the logistical stuff, I mean like portfolio work and basic fashion buisness criteria at this moment in time. I don't really want to get into a buisness with just very little knowledge or work. I'm studying for my Multimedia BTEC, so apart from my portfolio work (practical), I havent got much to offer a buisness. Seems like its a meer luck thing whether they say "YES, come join us and we'll train you", I dont know many fashion buisnesses doing internships and apprenticeships and its HELL trying to get in contact with them if you haven't got a name.

i think the whole purpose alot of people tell u to start off working under someone is to really learn the way a business is run/how to manage a business.

The reason why I believe in my skills with what i want to do in business so much si because i grew up under an entrepreneur who started multiple successful business's. I also went to business school and had internships. Just being creative and have unique designs will not be effective enough to hold your business together. There's a whole bunch of paperwork, legal fee's(protection from others and for yourself), financial reporting(taxes, etc.), etc. that you need done. There are plenty of big fashion companies in NYC that offer internships but i'm not sure if you'll understand how its run by working there but you will learn something from any job you take up. Even if you're a janitor you'll learn something....it just depends whether it will be a significant asset to you in the future or not.
